As a Director, Software Engineering - Growth you'll lead our Growth Software Engineering organization. Growth Software Engineering is playing a key role in driving Upstart's growth as we scale as a multi-product company. Specifically, Growth Software Engineering is responsible for (i) bringing more visitors to our website through partnerships, direct mail, digital marketing, and SEO, (ii) converting more visitors into applicants, (iii) increasing the lifetime value of applicants, and (iii) providing tools and capabilities (e.g. A/B testing framework, analytics tooling) that support product teams.
The Growth Software Engineering organization is currently composed of three full-stack engineering teams. The Director, Software Engineering - Growth will lead these teams through their front-line managers and will guide the organization's evolution, and technical vision and strategy. You will work directly with peers across Product, Growth, Marketing, Analytics, Machine Learning, and Design as a member of the Growth Vertical leadership team and serve as a leader on the Engineering management team.
Key responsibilities include:
- Establish and guide Growth Software Engineering principles and technical vision.
- Build and develop a high performing team of engineering leaders and engineers who operate with high standards and an outsized sense of ownership
- Operationalize the process of reporting on key success metrics that capture operational health, engineering efficiency, and product performance.
- Partner with peers in engineering to lead and drive continuous process improvements and innovation with a heavy bias towards automation
- Collaborate with cross-functional partners to develop medium and long-term roadmaps and drive key prioritization decisions.
How you'll make an impact:
- Lead the Growth Software Engineering vision, architecture, strategy and roadmap,
- Partner with our recruiting team to attract a diverse team of exceptional engineers,
- Coach individuals and managers through career and skill development
- Partner with product management, software engineering teams, and other internal stakeholders to set the technical roadmap for our core platform and services.
Minimum Qualifications:
- 10+ years of software engineering experience including 2+ years leading multiple engineering teams, a demonstrated ability to build, manage, motivate high-performing and distributed teams
- Experience leading successful growth engineering teams in fast paced and iterative environments
- Strong technical and software engineering fundamentals including deep knowledge of growth and marketing technologies and strategies
Preferred Qualifications:
- Bias for action. Sound judgment in maintaining a balance between building high-quality products and moving fast
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Able to explain complex business and technical concepts to all audiences
- Comfortable being hands-on and leading from the front to maintain a firm grasp of the details, and provide direct oversight and problem-solving leadership
- Experience leading teams at companies that have gone through periods of rapid business or organizational growth
Position Location - This role is available in the following locations: US Remote, San Mateo, Columbus
Time Zone Requirements - This team operates on the East/West Coast time zones.
Travel Requirements - This team has regular on-site collaboration sessions. These occur ~5-10 days per Quarter. If you need to travel to make these meetups, Upstart will cover all travel related expenses.

At Upstart, your base pay is one part of your total compensation package. The anticipated base salary for this position is expected to be within this range: $190,400-$280,000. Your actual base pay will depend on your geographic location–with our "digital first" philosophy, Upstart uses compensation regions that vary depending on location. Individual pay is also determined by job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. Your recruiter can share more about the specific salary range for your preferred location during the hiring process.
In addition, Upstart provides employees with target bonuses, equity compensation, and generous benefits packages (including medical, dental, vision, and 401k). Sales positions generally offer a competitive On Target Earnings (OTE) incentive compensation structure. The salary listed above for sales roles is OTE, which includes both salary and commission, assuming 100% target achievement.
