Job Summary:
The responsibility of the Director of University College is to manage, direct and create purposeful advising and programming that encourage academic success and the retention of first- and second-year students. The director reports to the Assistant Vice President, Student Success. He/she is responsible for designing, leading, training, and assessing programs and services that support student learning, as well as those that enhance the retention and persistence of students as they progress successfully towards graduation. The director ensures students receive advising and other services necessary to achieve their educational goals, works with students to remove barriers to their success, and provides support in a manner easily accessible to all.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Plans and organizes Academic Advising ensuring the unit is providing high-quality support services.
- Collaborates with academic deans, faculty, enrollment management, student affairs staff, and other relevant stakeholders to ensure consistent advising practices and cohesive communication to students regarding advising-related policies.
- Provides staff training in innovative, holistic advising practices.
- Assists with creating and supporting the strategic direction of the advising program, executing on improvement plans, and supporting cross-departmental goals.
- Develops and implements an advising model that links intentional curricular choices to student goal attainment.
- Oversees and implements technology platforms used in advising, particularly using early alerts.
- Serves on university committees, as required.
- Identifies opportunities to create, improve, and implement innovative services that support student success and retention goals.
- Coordinates with other student services staff to identify at-risk students and engage in appropriate proactive intervention to increase retention.
- Develops and implements Student Advising policies and procedures, ensuring university policy is adhered to department staff.
- Directs, plans, organizes, and provides leadership to the day-to-day operations of Academic Advising.
- Provides leadership, vision, and direction for campus-wide academic success programs and initiatives, promoting a culture of retention and persistence.
- Supervises and develops professional and administrative staff.
- Manages daily operations of the advising team and staff, which involves recruiting, hiring, training, supervising and evaluating advisors.
- Directs funds and budgeting as needed to finance University College projects and initiatives (with the approval of the Title III Director).
- Keeps detailed statistics about the status of academic advising on a consistent basis and the efficacy of initiatives.
- Utilizes available data to develop reports on a regular basis.
- Leads efforts to increase retention and strengthen academic support services.
- Develops and implements a comprehensive strategic plan for academic support and intervention programs.
- Advises and counsels students regarding educational issues such as course and program selection, class scheduling, college adjustment, study habits, and career planning. This includes understanding the academic requirements of the various majors in all the fields of study.
- Provide leadership and guidance for the development and delivery of programs and services designed to enhance the academic success of students from orientation through graduation.
- Oversees and implements the Second Year Experience.
- Supervises academic support and tutoring programs.
- Consults with faculty, administrators, and campus partners regarding academic advising and academic support issues.

Position Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications:
Master's degree in student personnel services, higher education, counseling or related field.
Three or more years of experience teaching and academic advisement at a university of community college.
Advance knowledge of advising and counseling techniques and philosophies including NACADA advising standards and student development theory.
Strong critical and analytical thinking skills, ability to clearly and concisely communicate with internal and external audiences.
Ability to collaborate and communicate effectively with a diverse student body and staff.
Ability to work outside of a traditional work schedule.
Preferred Qualifications:
Ph.D. or Ed.D. degree in higher education, student development, or related field.
Successful administrative experience.
