Duties and Responsibilities

Essential Job Functions: Assists students with preparing to be successful on the GED examination by instruction in a one to one tutoring environment. Interacts daily with potential GED students as well as ESL students. Performs initial intake on students, including formal testing. Must be comfortable interacting in person and on the phone with potential clients, tutors, other staff members, referring agencies (including parole, probation, and immigration officers). Must be proficient in accessing web sites and comfortable with a wide variety of tasks that may need to be performed on the computer. Candidates must have self-initiation skills and be able to work independently. Maintains and assists with database management, files maintenance, correspondence, and tutoring/teaching materials.

Working Conditions

Normal office environment. This position is part-time for 29 hours a week with some scheduling flexibility; candidate must be willing to work until 7:00 pm one evening a week.

Minimum Essential Qualifications

Knowledge: Knowledge of teaching methods used in adult basic education. Minimum one year teaching or tutoring experience required.

Skills/Abilities: Ability to communicate well in oral and written form; ability to work effectively with others and deal tactfully with sensitive information; ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks; excellent interpersonal skills required.

Physical Requirements: Constantly sees, hears and speaks; frequently bends, lifts objects weighing up to 20 lbs., answers telephone, sits, operates a PC, sorts and writes by hand; infrequently squats, stoops and stands.

Education/Experience: Minimum one year teaching/tutoring experience required. Bachelor degree preferred.
