General Purpose:


The Ethics and Conflicts Attorney helps ensure that the firm and its lawyers do not inadvertently violate conflict of interest rules that govern the firm’s representation of clients and that firm policies and procedures are honored. To be considered for the position, all interested candidates must submit 1) a cover letter; and 2) a current resume.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Reviews client, related party and adverse party data for potential new matters to determine whether these proposed engagements involve conflicts of interest. This entails identifying possible conflicts from conflict reports containing that data, contacting the attorneys responsible for relevant matters, and drafting and seeking conflict waivers from select clients to resolve those possible conflicts.
  • Responds to department emails regarding conflict and ethics issues.
  • Erects confidentiality walls using department software.
  • Reviews new client/matter requests and engagement letters for compliance with firm’s screening procedures.
  • Reviews client outside counsel policies for conflict and ethics issues and circulates policies to other firm reviewers for comment, as appropriate.
  • Stays apprised of the various conflict of interest rules in the firm’s jurisdictions.
  • Works with staff in our Ethics & Business Intake screening department.
  • As needed, analyzes and resolves conflict of interest issues arising from the firm’s hiring of new lawyers.
  • As needed, assists lawyers with drafting of engagement letter provisions to address conflicts of interest and other ethics issues.
  • As needed, performs research on legal issues relating to ethics matters.

Job Qualifications (Education, Experience and Certification):


  • J.D. degree from ABA-accredited law school.
  • Current admission in good standing to practice law in Colorado or another jurisdiction in which the firm practices, with no record of adverse disciplinary action.
  • Prior conflict attorney experience at a medium or large firm a plus.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills.
  • A background or interest in legal ethics and a willingness to learn.
  • Ability to solve problems and make sound judgments, and willingness to ask for help when needed.
  • Literacy in Word, Outlook, Excel, Adobe, Westlaw or Lexis, and Internet search engines. Ability and willingness to learn applicable software used in the conflict and intake process.

Additional Information:

  • This is a non-partnership track position.
  • There will be little or no direct client service
  • This is no billable hour expectation.
  • Night or weekend work will be rare.

Physical Requirements:

While performing the duties of this position, the employee must have the ability to sit, stand and/or walk for extended periods of time; manipulate (lift, carry, move) weights of at least ten (10) pounds; have repetitive wrist/hand/finger movement to work on a computer and/or related office equipment; speak clearly and concisely so listeners can understand; and regularly understand the speech of another person.

Colorado Salary Range is $101,935 - $169,891. A discretionary bonus may be available based upon performance.
