Position Summary:
The Emergency Department Coding Specialist under the supervision of Manager of Coding and Documentation Improvement, performs/supervises services in a designated area according to the policies, procedures, philosophy, and objectives of the department and hospital. Works cooperatively within department and other services to create a system of quality health care.
Medical coding jobs require candidates to keep an account for the coding and abstracting of patient encounters, including diagnostic and procedural information, significant reportable elements, and complications. It involves research and data analysis for reimbursement, medical records and identifies documentation deficiencies. The skill sets for this type scope of work performance requires specific education. The education and proficiencies required are in disease and procedure nomenclature, classification systems, anatomy and physiology along with HIM processes. Moreover, the requirement of one of the following credentials/certifications as an RHIA, RHIT, or CCS with coding experience is critical and necessary for the organization to obtain accurate DRG and CMI assignment for reimbursement purposes.
Duties & Responsibilities:
- Under the general supervision of the Manager of Coding and Documentation Improvement, is responsible for assigning codes to emergency department visits using ICD-10-CM and CPT through 3M encoder software, in accordance with official coding and reimbursement guidelines.
- Applies appropriate E/M level code to each case, according to ACEP guidelines. Abstracts all data elements into the Cerner Rev Cycle Medical Record Application for billing and statistical purposes.
- Maintains current working knowledge with all coding rules and regulations. Codes clinics or various outpt accounts as time allows.
- Performs any other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- 3-5 years of coding experience
- Certified Coding Specialist (CCS), Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT), or Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) required
- Epic experience desired
- Strong organizational, communication and clerical skills
