SMSI is looking for a Mechanical/Electrical Nuclear Facilities Engineer 2 for work at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) in Los Alamos, New Mexico. This is a full-time position and can be a flex work schedule.

Job Description

This position is responsible for ensuring that the technical aspects of construction, maintenance, and operations projects are executed in full conformance with the Approved Project Documents by monitoring facility maintenance and construction activities. This is accomplished by providing input during scoping, design, execution, and project closeout to ensure baseline documents are accurate, design documents are adhered to, and as-built configurations are verified. In addition, the job requires the following key elements.

  • Follow the LANL Conduct of Engineering (COE) Program in support of facility modifications and facility configuration management in accordance with the LANL Engineering Standards Manual (ESM), LANL Administrative Procedures (APs), LANL Master Specifications, and related Codes and Standards.
  • Lead the development of and review of engineering designs for new and replacement equipment installations including design details, equipment data sheets, equipment selection, calculations, installation instructions / specifications, post-modification testing and commissioning procedures, etc. to satisfy the applicable design requirements.
  • Interface and coordinate with other engineering disciplines and the customer(s) to establish design requirements, scope, schedule, and cost.
  • Assist in defining maintenance requirements including corrective maintenance and the tracking and trending of system performance.
  • Define and maintain technical baseline criteria and documents in support of facility configuration management
  • Support associated safety analyses and hazards evaluations.

Responsibilities:

  • Knowledge of facility mechanical engineering systems and calculations, applications of engineering methods, and application of computer-aided engineering tools to solve operations-based engineering problems.
  • Experience in installations including design details, equipment data sheets, equipment selection, installation instructions / specifications, post-modification testing and commissioning procedures, all to satisfy the applicable design requirements.
  • Knowledge of engineering work, planning, construction, and control methods.
  • Knowledge of industry, regulatory, or national codes and standards including IBC, IMC, IEBC, ASME, etc.
  • Advanced knowledge of Engineering principles and procedures, design guides, appropriate standards, and administrative practices.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and implement interdisciplinary design solutions to complex facility and equipment installations.
  • Demonstrated ability to apply project engineering practices. Demonstrated ability for self-directed work, planning, and prioritization. Demonstrated ability to work with multi-disciplinary teams.
  • In-depth knowledge of integrated systems engineering, principles, design guides and appropriate standards.
  • Ability to directly mentor less experienced engineers.
  • Knowledge of nuclear facility engineering work planning and control methods.
  • Knowledge of project and process nuclear facility engineering and operational practices
  • Demonstrated knowledge of basic construction engineering principles.
  • Aptitude in reading and understanding engineering design documents, drawings, and specifications to ensure their completeness, constructability, and operability.
  • Ability to effectively communicate engineering solutions both verbally and in writing for management, customers, peers, and craft personnel.
  • Aptitude for conducting field verifications of construction work to oversee, facilitate, and enforce compliance with drawings, specifications, national codes and standards.
  • Aptitude in collaborative problem solving to resolve nuclear facility and infrastructure engineering issues in the field as the liaison between design engineers and the constructor.
  • Knowledge of interface relationships with functional groups such as Engineering, Construction, Project Management and Operations.
  • Demonstrated expertise in reading and understanding engineering design documents, drawings, and specifications to ensure their completeness and constructability.
  • Demonstrated experience interpreting construction industry specifications, construction means and methods, and national construction codes and standards.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate engineering solutions both verbally and in writing for management, customers, peers, and craft personnel.
  • Proficiency in conducting field verifications of construction work to oversee, facilitate, and enforce compliance with drawings, specifications, national codes, and standards.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in collaborative problem solving to resolve nuclear facility engineering issues in the field as the liaison between design engineers, the constructor, and operations personnel.
  • Maintains direct working relationships with Project Management, Project and Field Engineering, Construction, Project Controls, Procurement personnel to ensure mutual understanding, development, and attainment of objectives.
  • Reviews any schedule revisions for impacts and participates in the development of contingency planning.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor s Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited college or university.
  • 3 years minimum of relevant experience.
  • Current registration as an Engineer in Training (EIT) is highly desirable.
  • Advanced engineering or technical degree is highly desired or operational experience in nuclear environment.
