Position Summary:

The Food Service Associate works with the Food Service Manager to prepare for Wheeler guests. The individual must perform well in a fast-paced food service environment, take direction from multiple leaders, work with volunteers, and maintain a safe and clean kitchen that enables the staff to serve nutritious meals to WM’s guests.


Wheeler Mission is a privately funded 501 (c) 3 non-profit, evangelical Christian ministry whose designated purpose is religious. Qualifications:

To perform the job successfully, an individual should demonstrate the following competencies to perform the essential functions of this position.

  • Possess a sincere love of Christ and maintain a Christian walk that is evident of that love. Individual must be willing to sign and adhere to the WM Statement of Faith
  • Dependability – consistently at work and on time, reports to all scheduled shifts, follows instructions, responds to management direction and solicits feedback to improve personal performance, and completes tasks in a timely and accurate manner
  • Teachability – must demonstrate ability to learn on the job, take direction from managers, and apply new learnings to their work
  • Adaptability – can learn in a new environment and apply skills developed on the job to complete new tasks as they arise
  • Computer skills – must have general knowledge of Microsoft Office suite of products (Outlook, Word, Excel, SharePoint)
  • Experience preparing large quantities of food in an industrial environment is highly preferred
  • Able to become Serv-safe certified (on the job)


Essential Requirements:

  • Aids in preparing a variety of meals according to the available donations and food supply on that day
  • Follows instructions given by Food Service Manager relating to the day’s food preparation plan
  • Works independently to carry out instructions to prepare meals
  • Adheres to proper sanitizing and safety procedures before, during, and after preparing a meal to ensure food is handled properly and the kitchen and dining areas remain safe and clean
  • Attends department and All Staff meetings when scheduled
  • Performs other duties as requested by the Food Service Manager


Work Environment:

Wheeler Mission is a non-profit organization that provides Christ-centered shelter, meals, and addiction recovery programs to guests. The Food Service Associate serves guests at Wheeler’s shelters in Indianapolis that serve people experiencing homelessness, addiction, domestic violence, poverty, and other difficult situations.


Physical Demands:

The Food Service Associate must stand for long periods of time in the kitchen to prepare food and move cooking equipment/food. They must be able to communicate with co-workers and supervisors and work as a team to prepare meals and maintain a safe environment. The Food Service Associate must be able to lift up to 20 pounds while receiving donation and working on storage/organization of food.

Required Education and Experience:

  • Must have a high school diploma or GED
  • Must possess a sincere love for Jesus Christ and demonstrate a strong Christian walk


Preferred Education and Experience:

  • Experience working in an industrial kitchen is preferred
  • Safe-Serv Certification is preferred


Background Investigation and Drug Testing:

  • After a “conditional offer of employment” is made, the individual must pass a background investigation.
  • Wheeler Mission Ministries has a mandatory drug testing policy for all new employees. The successful applicant must submit to and pass a drug and/or alcohol test. This drug and/or alcohol testing may occur any time after the applicant receives a conditional offer of employment. All employees must sign and adhere to WM Drugs and Alcohol policy and remain free from addiction to drugs or alcohol.

This position requires both a conflict of interest statement and a confidentiality statement.


Supervisory Responsibilities:

The Food Service Associate will supervise, train, and lead volunteers or volunteer groups who come to Wheeler to serve meals to guests. Volunteers are an integral part of the ministry and WM cannot serve meals without them. The Food Service Associate will aid the volunteers in learning their roles and completing their assignments during their time of service.


Expected Hours of Work:

Hours will typically be Monday – Friday during the day. Some weekends and evenings will be required. The full-time Food Service Associate is expected to work 40 hours per week.


Travel:

The Food Service Associate may travel between the multiple Wheeler locations.
