- 9th-12th Grade at Trivium Preparatory Academy in Goodyear, Arizona 85395
The study of language is an essential liberal art for students, cultivating a complete education in the Western tradition and appreciation of each language’s beauty. Rather than teaching modern languages with a narrow lens, such as “French for the tourist,” all courses are taught liberally for the cultivation of the mind. All Great Hearts modern language courses are taught in an immersion-style classroom through the four operations of language (speaking, listening, reading, and writing).
The French courses begin with building basic conversational skills and grammatical structures. Gradually, students engage in more complex structures and language features in order to translate texts from French into English through Socratic discussion. The modern language progression culminates in the reading of canonical literary works, which are examined through a combination of individual and group reading, class discussion, and writing assignments.
Certification is not required to teach at any of the Great Hearts Academies. Great Hearts teachers must demonstrate both a love for the breadth of the liberal arts and a depth of knowledge in the subject area(s) they teach. However, Great Hearts does ask that our teachers be able to demonstrate they are qualified to teach the subjects they are assigned.
