Nature and Scope:
Under the direction of the Wellness Director, the Group Exercise Instructors (including land or water group exercise instructor) shall be part of a staff team, responsible for conducting YMCA group exercise classes. The instructor is responsible for appropriate music selection, (adherence to recommended beats per minute for class mode and decibels), for class set-up and take-down, for education of class members about THE COACH APPROACH®, fitness-related issues, etc., and for forwarding the mission and values of the YMCA. The Group Exercise Instructor will have a key leadership role in the YMCA of the USA initiatives to “strengthen the foundations of community” through healthy living.

Ongoing Responsibilities:
  • Share opportunities for engagement outside of face-to-face classes – i.e. – live streaming classes, ymca360.org, etc.
  • Mandate social distancing and design flow of classes to support recommended distance as well as entrance and exit to studios
  • Design and deliver classes with the minimal amount of equipment to be limited to step benches, non-neoprene dumbbells, BOSU balls and kettlebells
  • Adherence to the 45-minute class limit
  • Clean all equipment that was utilized by class participants after class
  • Must be willing to deliver classes via live streaming and/or recorded classes
  • Assist in member short and long term goal attainment
  • Follow employee check-in procedures set by the Association office. Items include temperature checks, completing Covid-19 health questionnaire, wearing mask when enter facility, etc.
  • GXIs need to bring their own windscreens. The AO can order windscreens (bulk order if approved)
  • GXIs will need to provide their own mic belts. GXIs need to wipe down mics and stereo before and after use
  • Instructors will also need to bring own mat
  • Barre – ensure 6’ spacing is applied and barre wiped down thoroughly after use
  • Must possess current CPR/AED certification and renew it biannually prior to date of expiration. Updated licenses shall be uploaded via Y-Exchange (yexchange.org)
  • Must be current in specialty-area certifications (for example: group cycling, Pilates, yoga, kickboxing, etc.), sanctioned by Y-USA/ACE or YMCA of Metro Atlanta; these must be obtained by the Group Exercise Instructor prior to teaching the designated format.
