About the Role
As the Head of Global Trading Research and Analytics, you will be responsible for leading the ongoing efforts to integrate trading data and quantitative analytics into all aspects of the investment process and the firm. In this role you'll help drive strategy, innovation, and collaboration across the organization for many stakeholders including Portfolio Managers, Analysts, Traders, and Clients. This is a hands-on role in which you will both establish the vision, lead and directly contribute to how we leverage data and research to produce analytics and proprietary insights.
Wellington Management’s Trading Department employs over 60 traders globally and operates in specialized teams according to sectors, regions, and products. Our investment and trading activities are conducted on an industry- leading internally developed software platform, which we believe creates a meaningful competitive advantage. An in-house team of managers and analysts, who oversee the “business” of the department and provide in-depth, action-oriented insights into our trading capabilities and activities, supports us. Some of the more focused projects include:
- Profiling our systematic order flows to determine the optimal electronic/algorithmic execution strategy that will minimize the total cost of execution.
- Profiling our investment driven order flows to unearth momentum signals that can be incorporated into the pre trade strategizing process for improving outcomes.
- Developing a research and reporting infrastructure designed to monitor the performance of systematic strategies and momentum signals to gauge future efficacy.
Primary Responsibilities
- Develop, train, lead, and mentor a diverse team of equity and fixed income trading data analysts
- Act as the project lead and manager for all trading research initiatives, working with systems technology and their peers, to drive initiatives to completion
- Partnering with traders and trading management to improve overall execution results through innovation, enhanced decision-making tools and documentation
- Collaborating with the investment science team to design a Transaction Cost Analysis (TCA) framework for Global Trading that can support client reporting, best execution, trader insight and supervisory needs
- Working with trading technology, external vendors, and the dealer community on producing a high-quality data environment surrounding the life cycle of a trade
- Performing electronic trading platform due diligence and management of vendor relationships
- Understanding market structure trends and how to evolve our electronic trading strategy
- Ensure robustness of trading processes and alignment with investment decision objectives with the goal of preserving alpha and minimizing any hurdle to alpha
- Actively participate in the development of presentation materials for Boards & Oversight committees
- Effectively respond to requests from Institutional clients on matters pertaining to trading costs
Education and Experience
- Experience managing a broad team of talented individuals
- 10+ years of relevant work experience
- Advanced degree in Finance, Statistics, Applied Mathematics, Physics, Computer Science, Engineering, or a closely related field is encouraged
- Extensive background in global financial markets with a skew towards Fixed Income securities, market microstructure, investment decision life cycle, trading cost analytics, trading decision support tools, algorithms & trading venues
The Skills You Bring
- Ability to engage with traders, trading management & Portfolio Managers to innovate on their behalf; formulate and execute against a trading research agenda and collaborate with quantitative and technological partners
- Strong communication skills - ability to distill complex topics and concepts into a digestible format that will resonate with recipients on a conceptual basis
- Deep understanding of implicit trading costs, pre & post trade cost expectations and the mathematical models underneath them with an eye towards proprietary development
- Strong fundamental understanding of all asset class and market microstructure including the various execution platforms and associated data models within them
- Detailed understanding of all data elements and their many nuances pertaining to different aspects of the investment decision life cycle
- Experience working with programming languages such as Python/Q/R/SQL
- Knowledge of and experience with Visualization tools such as Tableau, delivering high quality research reports
- Collaborative, creative and team-oriented approach to leadership

At Wellington Management, our approach to compensation is designed to help us attract, inspire and retain the best talent in our industry. We strive to pay employees fairly and competitively across all levels and roles. Our approach to compensation considers all aspects of total compensation; all employees are eligible to receive salary, variable compensation, and benefits. The base salary range for this position is:
USD 65,000 - 150,000
This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered when making compensation decisions, including but not limited to skill sets; role; skills and experience; certifications; and education. This range is an estimate, and further details on salary and total compensation aspects will be shared with candidates during the recruitment process.
Base salary is only one component of Wellington’s total compensation approach. Other rewards may include a discretionary Corporate Bonus and/ or Incentives, if eligible.
