Laboratory Assistant

Qualifications: High School Diploma, GED, Bachelor's Degree Preferred

Physical Requirements

Standing: 3+ hours per day to perform many functions

Sitting: 3+ hours per day to perform data entry

Walking: 3+ hours per day

Lifting: 1-10 lbs., occasionally up to 25 lbs.

Other: Bending, squatting, and reaching several times per day.

Environmental Conditions

Exposure to bio hazardous agents (formalin and xylene) with periodic monitoring to ensure safety.

Job Specific Duties

• Primarily responsible for the receipt, verification, paper labeling, accessioning and gross description entry for each specimen submitted into the laboratory
• Responsible for adequate archival / retrieval of specimen containers, slides and blocks.
• Performs most clerical functions of the laboratory including data entry, report retrieval, faxing, and specimen send outs.
• Responsible for filing slides, blocks and requisitions, document all the specimen send outs and monitor specimens that are more than 3 days old for follow up, investigate what the delay may be and document it in the pending book. Also document all the other books in the front desk area and provide copies of the reports to the Pathologists when received
• Maintain clean work area.
• Communication to ordering personnel regarding stock and supply to clients.
• Work with the histology supervisor to develop techniques that will increase productivity and increase quality assurance.
• Completes all safety training as needed.
• Adheres to rules and regulations regarding safety and procedures.
• Client satisfaction a priority at all times.
• Maintain patient confidentiality at all times.
• Follow up with clients on issues; provides stellar customer service at all times in person, via email, or on telephone.
• Provides assistance to the histologists as needed.
• Assists with performing periodic routine maintenance of histology equipment excluding; IHC instrumentation
• Provides assistance to the histology supervisor when needed on requested projects
• Other duties as assigned by the Laboratory Director, Laboratory Manager and Laboratory Supervisor.
• Clerical and laboratory background preferred for this position.

Schedule: Afternoon Shifts 3pm - 11:30pm
