JOB TITLE: Librarian CLASSIFICATION: Exempt

REPORTS TO: Principal PAY GRADE: Teacher Scale / 187 Days

LOCATION: Assigned Campus DATE REVISED: 4/20/2017

PRIMARY PURPOSE:

Direct and manage the operation of the library/information services program at the campus level. Provide leadership to ensure high standards of library information service. Implement district policies, programs, and services.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education/Certification:

Bachelor's degree from accredited university or college

Valid Texas teaching certificate with required endorsements or training for subject/level assigned

Learning Resources Specialist or Endorsement Certificate

Special Knowledge/Skills:

Working knowledge of library/information services to public schools

Ability to evaluate, select and/or develop library resources and services appropriate for assigned campus

Strong communication skills, public relations, and interpersonal skills

Experience:

Three years experience as a successful classroom teacher preferred

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

Instructional Management

1. Effectively plan the campus library program to meet identified needs.

2. Demonstrate ability in implementing campus library program to support the district’s mission and goals.

3. Demonstrate proficiency in library science skills.

4. Demonstrate teaching skills in library instruction and provide services to the school community. Plan with administrators and teachers, individually or in groups, a systematic program of library/information skills instruction for the effective use of library media center materials and facilities in correlation with classroom instruction.

5. Assist the faculty with the collection of a variety of materials and information including up-to-date technology.

6. Provide group and individual guidance in the use of reference tools and research techniques.

7. Demonstrate clarity and correctness in written and oral expression.

8. Use library resources and/or one’s professional efforts to address the most pressing student needs, including intellectual, aesthetic, physical, social, vocational, emotional, and moral development needs.

9. Assist teachers effectively in designing successful learning experiences for students.

10. Present a positive role model for students that supports the mission of the school district.

Student Management

11. Interact effectively with students to promote positive attitudes toward school library program.

12. Coordinate effectively services for students.

13. Maintain positive effective working relationships with students.

14. Present a positive role model for students that supports the mission and goals of the school district.

Administration

15. Maintain a positive and effective working relationship with supervisors, peers, and subordinates.

16. Comply with all district policies and local campus routines as well as with federal laws and regulations affecting school library services.

17. Maintain high standards of productivity.

18. Make judgments using critical thinking skills and objective information.

19. Address priorities and complete tasks/obligations by practicing wise time management.

20. Keep records organized, up-to-date, and accurate.

21. Determine and build a common vision with appropriate staff members for library program improvement. Plan activities and implement school and district programs collaboratively with appropriate staff directed toward attainment of school’s mission.

22. Apply research findings and new trends in information technology and delivery to enhance library services improvement.

Personnel Management

23. Confer regularly with assigned staff to discuss performance. Jointly develop improvement objectives and identify professional development and training opportunities.

24. Direct assigned staff effectively, providing assistance in all areas to encourage improved overall performance.

25. Manage the use of library facilities to ensure maximum accessibility, attractiveness, orderliness and an atmosphere conducive to student learning.

26. Develop and submit budget based upon program needs and expend budget allocations within guidelines and priorities.

27. Manage the use, distribution, and maintenance of library equipment and resources.

Communication

28. Communicate mission and goals of library program to colleagues, students, and parents.

29. Articulate support for school and district library programs.

30. Support community activities that foster rapport and mutual respect between the campus library program and the larger community.

Professional Growth and Development

31. Develop and maintain a plan for professional improvement.

32. Demonstrate professional growth by providing leadership in addressing the challenges facing the profession.

33. Pursue professional development activities and disseminate ideas and information to other professionals.

34. Observe professional ethical standards in accordance with generally accepted community standards and the professional code of ethics.

Other

35. Perform duties in a professional, ethical, and responsible manner.

36. Perform other duties as assigned.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Supervise and evaluate the performance of the media aides and student assistants.
