The Marin County Free Library (MCFL) is a special taxing district that operates ten branch libraries in Marin under the authority of the Board of Supervisors. It provides public library services to the residents of the unincorporated areas of the County and the cities of Corte Madera, Fairfax, and Novato.

ABOUT THE POSITION

The Library Services Manager (LSM) position will report to the Assistant Director of County Library Services and lead the Marin County Free Library (MCFL) Technical Services Unit within the MCFL Support Services Division. The role includes collection development (physical and digital), materials acquisitions and processing, marketing/communications, and technology support. This position will supervise 7 staff members directly and lead a unit of more than 20 people.

More specifically, the LSM Tech Services:


  • Manages the delivery of library communications and marketing services through branches, community relations, and outreach programs.
  • Plans, organizes, supervises, reviews, and evaluates the work of staff at various levels; effectively recommends selection of staff.
  • Assists in the development of long- and short-range plans, policy, procedures, organization, objectives, and services; reviews and recommends changes to library methods, technology, systems, and procedures.
  • Serves as a member of the library management team.

MCFL’s branches and mobile units serve the community of Marin County. Decisions regarding collection development are made with an understanding of the dynamic and diverse nature of the community. To best meet the needs of a changing population, the Collection Development team considers such factors as demographics at the neighborhood, citywide and county levels, and the demographics of the greater Bay Area.

The ideal candidate is an enthusiastic, customer-service oriented individual who can assist internal and outside clients to meet their digital services, collection development, technology, and public marketing/communications needs. The ideal candidate demonstrates a track record of experience and success with initiatives focused on equity, diversity, and inclusion. The ideal candidate embraces managing multiple projects focused on the goal of supporting staff and community. The ideal candidate has experience with and can design and deliver creative solutions to address the community’s information needs, as well as embrace dynamic and non-traditional library approaches to meeting digital services and collection development needs. In addition, the ideal candidate has experience facilitating and building partnerships with outside organizations and vendors and can work collaboratively with team members and personnel at all levels of the organization. The ideal candidate also has demonstrated experience in data collection, management, and analysis.

Typically, equivalent to possession of a Master's degree in an appropriate library curriculum from an ALA college or university and four years of experience as a professional librarian, which includes two years as a library branch manager or other significant supervisory and administrative experience.

Business analysis experience is highly desirable.

Employment with the County requires the affirmation of a loyalty oath to this effect. Employees are required to complete all Disaster Service Worker-related training as assigned, and to return to work as ordered in the event of an emergency.
