This recruitment is for a part-time, non-benefited position limited to 919 hours of employment in a fiscal year (July 1 through June 30) with an average of less than 30 service hours per work week. Hours may vary between 0 - 16 hours per week, dependent upon the daily staffing needs of the department.This recruitment is open until a sufficient number of applications are received and may close at any time without prior notice. Position Summary: To ensure the safety of swimmers and enforce regulations at City pools; to assist or conduct instructional swimming classes for children and adults; to perform rescues and administer first aid; and to perform related duties as assigned. Distinguishing Characteristics: This is a journey level position in the Lifeguard series. Incumbents perform lifeguarding tasks and conduct organized swimming instruction. This position requires Water Safety Instruction Certification over and above all other certifications required of the Lifeguard positions.Essential Functions: Functions may include, but are not limited to, the following: assist or conduct various instructional swimming classes for children and adults; evaluate the progress of class participants; supervise the activities of swimmers in and around a pool; ensure that policies, rules and regulations are observed so that no hazard to safety is created; rescue persons in distress or persons in danger of drowning; administer first aid in the event of an injury; perform life-saving techniques; answer inquiries from the public; provide information pertaining to the pool regulations, facilities and programs. Maintain records and logs; prepare reports; assist in the operations of swimming pools, related facilities and equipment; perform routine custodial and maintenance tasks; build and maintain positive working relationships with co-workers, other City employees and the public using principles of good customer service; perform related duties as assigned.

EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
Any combination of education and/or experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be possession of the following current certifications: Lifeguard Training, CPR for the Professional Rescuer, AED, Title 22: First Aid for Public Safety Personnel and Water Safety Instructor (WSI). Emergency Response or EMT certification is acceptable in lieu of Title 22. Note: Must be 16 years of age or older. Proficiency levels are required at time of interview.
