SUBFUNCTION DEFINITION: Nurses who have graduated from a college level nursing program and have passed a national licensing exam.

TITLES SUPERVISED: Nursing Resource Clerk

PURPOSE OF POSITION: To provide leadership and to coordinate Cincinnati Children's operational activities during off-shifts; weekends and holidays; to co-lead organizational situation awareness activities/oversight 24/7; to supervise the patient placement process. To plan; direct; organize; control and improve functions of the Patient Services functions in order to meet the fiscal; patient care; research and teaching needs of a Medical Center dedicated to the care of infants; children and adolescents.

REPRESENTATIVE RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Compliance - Patient Services Management
Sustain a working understanding of regulatory requirements and accreditation standards. Evaluate area of responsibility for compliance with regulatory and accreditation standards. Identify best practices as well as deficiencies to share with peers and make recommendations for improvement. Participate in the development of corrective action plans to guide needed and sustainable improvements. Provide project leadership, and/or hands-on support for implementation of operational dashboards that allow the area AVP to monitor progress and insure gains are attained and sustained. Ensure that compliance and readiness plans are current. Work with department leaders of Center for Professional Excellence (CPE) and Accreditation Services to improve staff competency, compliance and documentation. Enhance relationships to promote interdisciplinary involvement and knowledge of compliance standards, status, and actions. Track laws, regulations and standards that may affect practice and policies. Work with direct reports to insure that needed changes are made by the effective date of any change(s) in requirements.

  • Interprofessional Practice
Demonstrates consistent integration of the Interprofessional Practice Model (IPM) in all aspects of practice.

  • Leadership:
Provide leadership for clinical nursing practice, patient care delivery and resources. Co-lead, with physician safety officer, organizational situation awareness activities 24/7. Model effective communication and collaboration. Foster relationships within and between departments. Promote creative problem solving. Provide constructive feedback. Recognize and reward excellence. Lead and/or participate in house-wide teams/committees related to areas of responsibility, involvement, or interest. Administrator-on-site for emergency situations and disaster response. Initiate Code White in absence of Administrator-on-Call, and perform designated role within the CCHMC Pediatric Hospital Incident Command System. Provide on-shift extension of unit directors as requested or delegated for immediate decision-making.

  • Performance Improvement:
Monitor organizational situation awareness and patient flow processes; plan and/or participate in approaches for improvement activities. Collect, measure and analyze data and report performance over time. Improve and redesign processes based on the evaluation, and reassess continuously. Participate in the system-wide patient flow and SA improvement initiatives.

  • Patient Placement:
Act as a resource to the patient flow coordinators for inpatient admissions and transfers, utilizing patient placement guidelines and infection control policies. Intervene, as necessary, to negotiate complex admissions.

  • Staffing:
Allocate shift-to-shift staffing resources based upon budgeted staffing plans, unit census, and acuity.

  • Nurse Liaison:
Act as a nurse liaison during traumas to coordinate inner and outer core activities. Perform expanded liaison role during multiple traumas. Act as nurse liaison during Code Blue to facilitate patient transfer and duties as assigned per policy. Act as nurse liaison during Medical Response Team calls to facilitate group agreement on patient disposition and as assigned per policy. Provide accurate, concise information in response to various inquiries from media and other sources.

  • Patient and Family Advocate:
Serve as an advocate for patients and families. Intervene, as necessary, to support patients, families, and/or staff with patient/family concerns. Provide administrative assistance. Perform Caring Network duties. Facilitate special communication and language needs.

Qualifications

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

Required:
  • Current RN license to practice in the state
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing, Master's of Science in Nursing preferred.
  • Five years of related nursing experience

Preferred:
  • Master's of Science in Nursing
