How You’ll Contribute
The Communications Division leads the development and execution of integrated communications and marketing strategies to further the mission of the National Geographic Society and advance its position as one of the world's most trusted non-profit organizations and global brands. Driven by the Society's vision to be more globally known for its impactful Explorer-led mission programs, the Division's creative and strategic minds develop strategic communications, marketing campaigns, creative, content, and media to promote the Society's strategic plan and key priorities. The Division comprises five departments: Engagement and Marketing Strategy, Brand and Creative, Strategic Communications, Executive Communications, and Content and Editorial.
Reporting to the Senior Director, Creative, the Manager, Research (MR), will support the Brand and Creative team to research, fact-check, and produce content that communicates our mission, builds enthusiasm for the brand, highlights the work of our Explorers, and compels people to act. Working closely with the VP, Brand and Creative, Senior Director, Creative and key brand, creative, marketing, and digital partners, the MR will ensure accuracy on visual and written output for all team deliverables. The MR will also assist in the research and planning process for the National Geographic HQ public space renovation project, Base Camp.
The MR will meet regularly with Brand and Creative team members across the various departments of the Communications division, including concepting, writing, photo editing, and design/layout, branding, and marketing to provide specified content, answer complex questions, and verify all written work. The MR will support the team and division with writing and copy-editing tasks as needed. The MR will serve as main liaison with other NGS Divisions working collaboratively on content and research for creative, brand, and marketing projects. The MR will be responsible for working closely with the Production Manager, reporting on project progress and communicating internal feedback to the Brand and Creative team to ensure an effective and accurate project. The MR will work closely with the Production Manager to ensure completion of all projects on time and budget.
Your Impact
Responsibilities Include:
Research (60%)
- In consultation with the Brand and Content team, ensure factual accuracy, editorial and brand integrity across department output —creative briefs, scripts, presentations, events, brand activations, exhibitions, marketing copy, and more.
- Manage research processes for the Brand and Creative team and overall Communications division to ensure factual accuracy for assigned projects and related deliverables.
- Support research requests from Communications division and senior executive teams as needed.
- Support the team’s creation of annotations, providing instruction, feedback and, as needed, original research to achieve a final product that meets National Geographic Society brand standards.
- Manage relations with internal and external experts and other key stakeholders to ensure accuracy and protect brand equity.
- Identify potentially controversial or sensitive issues and editorial remedies to mitigate them.
- Working with Production Manager, create work schedules, monitor and track deliverables, and expenses.
Content Coordination and Creation (30%)
- Serve as liaison between vendors and Brand and Creative team to ensure accuracy and quality of deliverables.
- Coordinate content development tasks with project owners, staff writers, photo editors, and designers in support of vendors content and design needs.
- Provide writing and copy-editing support to the Brand and Creative team as part of approval processes for all deliverables, including presentations, press releases, website language, bios and other key documents being produced on a regular basis.
- Actively participate in brainstorming sessions, as-needed, to help further the process related to the naming of programs, campaigns, taglines, systems, etc.
Scheduling, Reporting, and Review (10%)
- Prepare periodic reporting and present, as needed, on project and progress.
- Compile, organize, and archive all research, documents, and presentations related to the development of projects in appropriate team drives on Dropbox and Google drive.
- Formally and informally review processes, provide critiques of quality and effectiveness, recommend new practices for greater success and efficiency.
What You’ll Bring
Educational Background
Bachelor’s degree from four-year college or university. Concentrations in communications, public relations, journalism or related subjects.
Minimum Years and Types of Experience
5 years of research and fact-checking experience, preferably in a fast-paced environment such as a communications firm or media organization.

Necessary Knowledge and Skills
- Highly organized, with extensive experience in research, fact-checking, and editing.
- Must collaborate and communicate effectively (oral and written), manage multiple projects simultaneously, meet deadlines, pay close attention to detail.
- Must be capable of working cross-divisionally with a large, diverse group of professionals from educators, to scientists, to fellow creatives.
- Superb communication and interpersonal skills.
- Capacity to work independently and in teams as required.
- Excellent writing and copy-editing skills; knowledge of AP style a plus.

Salary Information
As a leading nonprofit organization, National Geographic Society offers competitive salary and total rewards to attract, develop, and retain an innovative and dynamic workforce.
The salary range for this position starts at $77,000.
Job Designation
