PURPOSE OF POSITION

The Thriving Earth Exchange is an AGU Strategic Initiative that leverages Earth and space science for societal benefit. Thriving Earth Exchange helps community leads and scientists work together to use Science to advance local priorities related to sustainability, resilience, and environmental issues. The Manager of Community Science Cohorts will manage the cohort program, including ensuring the success of Thriving Earth Exchange projects that are part of the cohort, and a good experience for community leaders, fellows, and scientists.

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES
The Manager of Thriving Earth Exchange Cohorts, Thriving Earth Exchange will serve as the lead responsible for the overall management of the Thriving Earth Exchange cohort program. In this capacity the incumbent will:

  • Manage the day-to-day operations of the cohort program, including
  • Supervising the program managers who interact directly with Thriving Earth community leads, scientists, and partners
  • Ensuring that Thriving Earth Projects make progress toward community outcomes and that participants have rewarding experiences
  • Working with other Thriving Earth Exchange staff to ensure we have enough high-quality volunteers to meet program goals
  • Manage the selection, training, matching and coaching of all volunteers
  • Develop and implement timelines for all regular cohort program activities
  • Assist the Director in developing plans and timelines for new or expanded cohort activities
  • Represent and advocate for the resources (including staff) necessary to successfully support cohorts as they complete community science projects
  • Work with external and internal partners to help advance cohort-related program goals
  • Ensure cohorts and volunteers prioritize work with people and communities who have been historically left out of science

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Excellent organizational, analytic and project management skills, including the ability track and manage multiple complex projects at the same time and meet deadlines and the ability to set priorities.
  • Ability to build systems that support and streamline the work of managing cohorts,
  • Ability to evaluate proposed program changes and additions in terms of the impact on staff and volunteers
  • Ability to make decision making using sound judgement based on Thriving Earth Exchange principles and AGU values.
  • Strong verbal and written communications skills, including superior skill in presenting.to/teaching and facilitation in both public and private settings
  • High degree of professionalism and accuracy.
  • Demonstrated discretion on confidential matters.
  • Skill in managing and mentoring staff and coordinating activities across staff.
  • Ability to create and manage teams to achieve goals on a budget and with a timeline

EXPERIENCE:

  • 5+ years of experience with a Bachelor’s Degree, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience in a scientific, knowledge-based or technical setting is a strong plus, but not required.
  • Experience and credibility in leading community inspired science projects that produce local impact.

PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT:

  • Repetitive motion, substantial movements of the wrist, hands, and fingers.
  • Walking and standing occasionally required, sitting a majority of the time.
  • Using computer screen and/or read for extensive periods of time.
  • Occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, or pulling of up to 10 lbs.
  • Extended working hours and travel (up to 10%) may be necessary.
