This Marine Fisheries Technician II – will serve as the lead technician to the principal biologist and will be responsible for coordinating and conducting field sampling and data collection for various sampling programs conducted out of the Manteo Field Office. Fishery independent monitoring programs include a red drum longline survey, juvenile seine and trawl surveys, gill net survey, water quality monitoring, and acoustic telemetry. Fishery dependent sampling includes the sampling of key fisheries as they occur throughout the year including gill nets, trawls, long hauls, pound nets, and seines. The position will also participate in the Division’s tagging program, tagging species such as red drum, striped bass, cobia, spotted seatrout, and southern flounder. Biological information collected during sampling of recreationally and commercially important species includes but is not limited to length, weight, sex, reproductive condition, genetic samples, and extraction of age structures. The technician will also be required to operate and trailer vessels up to 28 feet in length. The technician will also provide technical assistance to the program biologist. Technical responsibilities include recording, editing, and organization of data and producing summary reports as requested. Additionally, the technician will be responsible for boat, trailer, and gear maintenance. Normal work hours will vary, but late evenings, early mornings, and some overnight travel are required. Occasional work on weekends is required. A valid driver’s license is required. The job requires the ability to swim, lift heavy samples of fish (up to 50 pounds), computer use, and working both independently and collaboratively as part of a team.

Recruitment Range: $34,084 - $45,000

To qualify for this position, applicants must document on the application that they possess ALL the following:


  • Experience collecting biological data
  • Experience with data management
  • Experience operating and/or trailering boats
  • Experience maintaining sampling gear and/or associated equipment
Applicants who were born after January 1, 1988, must follow the requirements for boating safety education, General Statute 75A-16.2.

Management Preferences :
  • Experience operating and trailering vessels during night time

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Associate's degree in one of the agricultural, biological, engineering, environmental or natural resource sciences or a closely related curriculum from an appropriately accredited institution and two years of experience in environmental or natural resources management work; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
