Job description
Interdisciplinary position seeks candidates with backgrounds covering fabrication & metrology of polymer films. Technician is responsible for generating & evaluating components that include liquid crystal polymer films. This includes some fabrication (substrate preparation, chemical handling, patterning (UV lithography) and coating. Upkeep of fabrication tools including custom UV exposure systems. Past experience with aligning optical bench builds a plus. Works with other engineers to keep lab spaces orderly and functioning. (Approximately 25% of work time)
Fabricated or supplied components are evaluated using a variety of optical and mechanical methods, with an emphasis on analysis of multi-layer films. Technician is responsible for inventory, assigned metrology, and data distribution. Schedules large-scale metrology projects on shared tools and with partnered labs and XFN teams. Formats and organizes data for distribution among wider team (up to 50% of work time). Works with project leads and other technicians and engineers to provide quality results in a timely manner.
Uses fabrication & metrology skills to participate in failure analysis projects, including executing designed experiments and advising project managers, designers and optical scientists on available resources for deadline-sensitive investigations (up to 25% of time).
Other duties as assigned may include design or build of custom metrology methods, liquid crystal mixture formulation, orchestrating tool installations & service, and interfacing with lab management and EHS to ensure compliance with laboratory health and safety regulations. Potential for travel, up to 10%, restrictions permitting.
Ideal candidates will have strong communication skills and a commitment to safety & compliance in the laboratory.
Qualifications
Bachelors + 2 years experience or Master’s + 1 year experience in physics, optics, materials science, technology, chemistry or related field.
Experience working in hazardous environments, including wet chemistry labs (particularly with solvents, flammables, some caustics) and optics labs utilizing class3b/4 lasers in the VIS and UV. Prior cleanroom experience.
Experience with some combination of photolithography, wet coating methods, materials formulation, patterning of aniostropic materials, liquid crystal films, or materials analysis.
Experience with optical metrology of birefringent materials, particularly multi-layer analysis. Prior experience with some combination of polarizing optical microscopy, ellipsometry, polarimetry, lens design or analysis, geometric phase optics, or diffractive optics.
Top 3 must-have HARD skills:
1. Wetchem and laser experience – we can train on specific fabrication techniques but I need someone comfortable with the safe operation of Class4 lasers, UV hazards, chemical hazards, etc. The right candidate respects safety and compliance standards because several labs are shared spaces with mixed hazards.
2. Established mechanical skills – operating/maintaining systems like lithography or automated coating systems, an ability to troubleshoot and work with vendor technicians either remotely or in person to resolve mechanical/firmware issues.
3. Tool installation skills: ability to communicate with lab management, facilities, etc about the installation and care of large and small tools, including technical details like power requirements, hazard identification, certifications and documentation. Can work as part of a team (certain tasks are forbidden to the role and must be arranged through the proper channels) and provide accurate information in a timely manner to prevent unnecessary delays.
Good to have skills:
1. Metrology experience – basic microscopy, surface analysis, mechanical evaluation 2. Other metrology experience – materials, SEM/AFM etc, 3. Demonstrated knowledge of executing designed experiments (DOE) or participating in long-term, stats- driven reliability evaluations.
