Position Summary:

The Maintenance Tech II/HVAC Apprentice repairs maintains and assists with the installation of freezers and refrigerators, plumbing systems, and HVAC systems for campus buildings and facilities.


Duties and Responsibilities:

HVAC Maintenance

  • Assists with the installation, maintenance and repair of refrigerators and freezers, maintains records of repair, and performs preventative maintenance.
  • Assists with the inspection and operation of air conditioning units and machinery to determine that all are functioning properly.
  • Assists with testing procedures including: tests efficiency of system with instruments and makes adjustment to thermostatic controls and blowers, tests joints and connections according to type of refrigerant used, tests large systems before placing them in operation.
  • Assists HVAC and Inventory Facilities staff to keep up-to-date records of chemicals used in refrigerators and freezers, that chemical levels are in compliance with regulations.
  • Installs and repairs appliances and equipment.
  • Installs and/or renovates plumbing and HVAC systems.
  • Performs testing procedures to troubleshoot all electromechanical systems on campus equipment.

General Maintenance and Facilities Support

  • Applies safety precaution pertaining to safety regulations and procedures including: chemical safety, hazard communication program; personal protective equipment; lifting procedures, lock out/ tag out procedures, back injury prevention; flammable storage, housekeeping; fire extinguisher training.
  • Performs maintenance and repair of various facilities as indicated on daily work orders.
  • Works cooperatively with others and accepts direction from supervisors.
  • Performs associated Facilities department maintenance work as requested, including, but not limited to: snow removal, event set-up and clean-up, truck loading and unloading, etc.

Other duties as assigned.


Required Skills
  • Knowledge of filter identification and application, equipment and component identification, safety procedures, refrigeration cycle, soft soldering, blueprint reading, electrical schematics, pneumatics and alignment.
  • Skill in maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing DX equipment, pneumatic components, air compressors, air dryers, PRV, supply and branch air, reading and interpreting block diagram blueprints and ladder diagram electrical schematics, alignment, replacement and repair of motors, bearings, couplings, sheaves, starters and pumps, and soft soldering refrigerant, pneumatic and water lines.
  • Ability to work flexible shifts and overtime if necessary.
  • Ability to work with a team as well as independently.


Required Experience
  • A minimum 18 months’ of experience in the HVAC field.
  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • A combination of education, training, and /or experience which demonstrates the ability to perform the required duties may be substituted for minimum qualifications.
