Emergency Communications Officer I/II/III/IV (Non-Certified)
$40,000 / year or higher DOQ + Full-Time County Benefits.
James City County is offering exciting opportunities for a career in emergency communications with signing bonuses for eligible candidates! Both non-certified and certified Emergency Communications Officers are eligible for $2,500 and $4,000 additional signing bonuses, respectively, regardless of career ladder level. Tuition assistance for job-related college courses is also available, up to $5,250 per year.
There are four levels of Emergency Communications Officer distinguished by the level of work performed and the qualifications of the employee:
Emergency Communications Officer I: $39,199 / year or higher DOQ
Emergency Communications Officer II: $42,028 / year or higher DOQ
Emergency Communications Officer III: $45,074 / year or higher DOQ
Emergency Communications Officer IV: $48,347 / year or higher DOQ
The Emergency Communications Division is looking for individuals to perform responsible work using a Computer-Aided Dispatch system to dispatch calls to Police, Fire, Emergency Medical Services, Animal Control, Game Warden and James City Service Authority (JCSA) personnel, usually in response to emergency situations.
Responsibilities:
· Accurately obtains, records and disseminates emergency and non-emergency calls for service from citizens and visitors to Police/Fire/EMS responders.
· Reviews emergency call information; determines nature of call; dispatches call to the most appropriate and closest unit or person to the scene of the emergency; relays all pertinent information to responding units; stays in constant contact to relay additional information and respond to requests.
· Operates radios, computer networks, multi-lined telephone systems and related equipment.
· Enters wanted/missing persons and/or stolen property into the State and National wanted system.
· Monitors and responds to the Surry Nuclear Power Plant and activates alarms when necessary; monitors the National Weather Alert System; contacts Virginia Department Transportation (VDOT) as necessary.
· (Emergency Communications Officer II/III) Assists in training new employees.
· (Emergency Communications Officer IV) Acts as supervisor in the Emergency Communications Supervisor’s absence
Requirements:
· Any combination of education and experience equivalent to a high school diploma; some related education and work experience preferred.
· Knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer service including setting and meeting quality standards for services, and evaluation of customer satisfaction.
· Skill in use of computer software, especially Microsoft Office Suite.
· Ability to input data via a computerized network at a reasonable rate of speed as determined by the department.
· Ability to make quick decisions while maintaining composure; deal effectively with staff, the public and other agencies often in emergency situations; communicate effectively with others, both orally and in writing; speak distinctly, clearly, and concisely; hear and understand radio and telephone transmissions and respond appropriately; understand and follow directions.
