The Nursing Support Technician (NST), provides age appropriate, culturally and ethnically sensitive care, maintains a safe environment, collects information and communicates effectively using applicable technologies under the direction and supervision of licensed personnel. Provides personal care to selected patients, assists with activities of daily living, patient comfort and nourishment and performs selected tasks and therapies as delegated by a licensed professional. The role of NST also includes patient advocacy, teaching, and performance improvement. NST’s will be cross trained to serve as a Patient Safety Technician. The NST position provides a vital link in the chain of Quality of Care.

• Performs basic patient care activities as directed by licensed personnel. Assists with personal care and activities of daily living, such as bathing, grooming, and eating/drinking, filling of water pitchers.
• Supports patient rounding by providing direct visualization of patient safety and basic needs, ensuring that belongings, meals, call lights, etc are within patient reach and bed is in safe position.
• Answers patient call lights promptly and courteously addressing patient needs; notifying and escalating patient needs to other caregivers as appropriate.
• Receives physicians, visitors, and ancillary staff, assisting them when possible, including referring them to other departments or units within the NCH Healthcare system.
• Performs errands as necessary, including obtaining and returning supplies to Central Supply, Lab, Dietary, etc.
• Performs patient transport, correctly identifies patient.
• Assists with housekeeping duties to maintain cleanliness of patient rooms and hallway areas. Assists with keeping patient rooms/areas stocked, linen refresh, clean and orderly.
• Complies with safety requirements and resolves problems relating to the delivery of patients, supplies, and equipment; PPE supplies stocked, reports nearly full needle boxes.
• Act as a patient sitter, observe patient and notify the RN immediately in the event of an emergency or sudden change in the patient’s condition, mood, or behavior. Completes appropriate documentation.
• Demonstrates basic knowledge of patients currently on unit.

• Minimum of High School or GED required.
• Basic Life Support (BLS Provider) certification from the American Heart Association required.
• Polite and courteous phone etiquette with ability to clearly communicate with others.
• Effective organizational skills and ability to multitask.
• Intermediate computer knowledge: Uses Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and Windows.
