Job description

About the Position:

Institute for Exceptional Care (IEC, www.ie-care.org) is a non-profit organization seeking a dynamic and compelling Policy Director to join us in our commitment to transforming healthcare for people with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities (I/DD).

The Policy Director will lead key multi-stakeholder initiatives that engage policymakers, insurers, regulators, disability advocates, researchers, and clinical leaders. They will represent IEC externally through public presentations, with funders, and in discussions with key stakeholders. They will also develop policy positions and public comment letters on relevant topics and serve as a member of IEC's leadership team in shaping a long-term strategy for change. This is an opportunity to help build new strategies and coalitions to scale health system solutions for people with IDD and improve their health and life outcomes. Travel may be required a few times a year.

IEC is in a start-up and all-hands-on-deck situation. All team members should be prepared to pitch in occasionally on whatever tasks are necessary to get the work done. We have a warm, vibrant team culture. We laugh, philosophize, and invest in each other with a great deal of kindness.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design and lead priority initiatives, including recruiting external partners, developing work plans and collateral materials, and ensuring successful project execution.
  • Represent IEC externally through speaking at conferences, other meetings, and to media.
  • Cultivate and evolve IEC's relationships with government agencies, healthcare industry groups, national thought leaders, and clinical organizations. This includes developing a partnership strategy for IEC that furthers our mission and that is achievable and sustainable.
  • Lead IEC's efforts in administrative advocacy and build toward a future portfolio of legislative advocacy.
  • Contribute to IEC's programmatic strategy as a member of the senior leadership team.
  • Contribute to the development of grants and other funding applications.
  • Contribute to the design and execution of other programs and projects as appropriate.

Who We Are:

Institute for Exceptional Care (IEC, www.ie-care.org) is a relatively new non-profit organization, committed to transforming healthcare for people with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities (IDD). IEC takes a structured approach to scale solutions for people with IDD by addressing gaps in Coverage (insurance, financing & payment for services), Connections (coordination of services across clinical, home-and-community-based services (HCBS), and other sectors), and Care (a culturally and technically prepared general clinical workforce and a well-resourced HCBS sector).

Qualifications:

The successful candidate will enjoy public speaking, multi-stakeholder collaborations, and the opportunity to design concrete, out-of-the-box solutions for the health system. They should have at minimum a bachelor's degree, excellent written and oral communication skills, and 10+ years of leadership experience in health policy, healthcare services, or disability policy and services. A history of successful working relationships with executives in multiple healthcare sectors, and the ability to work independently with limited supervision (but plenty of thought partnership) are essential. Direct personal experience with IDD and/or a graduate degree in a related field would be highly valuable but not required.

Other Important Information:

IEC is currently a fully virtual organization but has occasional in-person staff meetings in Washington D.C. and compensates for travel and lodging costs. Compensation will be competitive and commensurate with a candidate's qualifications and experience.

How to Apply:

IEC accepts all applications online at https://iecare.isolvedhire.com/jobs/. Please submit both a resume and cover letter to formally apply for the position. Questions or requests for accommodations can be sent to hr-iec@thearc.org.

More About IEC:

Institute for Exceptional Care is dedicated to transforming healthcare for people with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities (IDD). IEC was founded by healthcare leaders who have both led national efforts to transform healthcare payment and care delivery, and cared for affected loved ones. We partner with affected adults, family members, and many disability organizations. IEC focuses on addressing gaps in financing and payment for healthcare and other necessary support services, in coordination across service sectors such as clinical and home- and community-based supports, and in the cultural and clinical preparedness of practitioners and payers to serve the I/DD population.

IEC works through thought leadership, policy analysis, research, convening and coalition building, and developing tools and strategies for broad use in the industry. We have successfully raised nearly $3M to support a breadth of initiatives with esteemed partners including major academic health centers, medical/nursing/dental professional societies, major disability organizations, health insurers, government entities, and the National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine. Our Board, Advisory Council, and Values Framework Group include significant representation from self-advocates and caregivers, and we compensate them for participating in IEC initiatives. The Arc provides operational support to IEC.
