Full Time
Baltimore, MD

Job description

The Baltimore Sun seeks an editor to lead our coverage of politics and government. As the leader of this team, this editor will direct our work to hold elected officials, candidates and bureaucrats accountable through investigations and the use of public records. This coverage is vital to our public service mission as a news organization and key to furthering The Baltimore Sun as the preeminent news source statewide.

This person will be responsible for assigning, editing and producing content that serves our audience on multiple platforms (mobile site, desktop, apps, social, newsletters, print, etc.). This editor ensures quick responses to breaking news while directing a talented team to produce thoughtful enterprise, analysis and investigative projects that readers can’t find anywhere else.

Beyond supervising a core group of beat reporters, the editor would work with visual journalists and multimedia journalists to develop additional and innovative ways to tell stories. This role requires guiding stories from conception to final edit, as well as writing compelling headlines, maximizing SEO and keeping digital channels updated.

What you will do:

  • Guide reporters on story and content development, ensuring the content is fair, balanced and compelling.
  • Supervise reporters developing enterprise pieces that provide news, information and context.
  • Direct reporters in seeking diverse voices, stories and perspectives.
  • Ensure text is edited quickly for digital distribution.
  • Use expertise and good judgment in assigning content in the most appropriate formats, such as narrative articles, takeaways, photo galleries, video, audio, timelines, charts, graphics and interactive tools
  • Ensure that headlines are optimized for search engines and social media.
  • Use audience metrics/analytics and keen news judgment to inform decisions on assignments and engagement strategy.

What you will bring:

  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications or related field, or equivalent experience
  • Excellent writing and editing skills
  • Proven ability to work quickly and accurately using a web-based content management system.
  • Fluency in web technology and online content publishing required
  • Must work well in a team environment, have the ability to multitask in a deadline-driven environment, and adapt constructively to change
  • Professional experience using web-based social networks is preferred.

The Baltimore Sun is committed to building a diverse newsroom that reflects the people it covers and the audience it serves. Candidates are encouraged to highlight new perspectives they can bring to our team.
