The Organization
The Society of St. Vincent de Paul is a worldwide Catholic organization of laypersons established in Oregon in 1869. The society is open to all who wish to live their faith by loving and serving the less fortunate with respect, and without judgment or discrimination. We give aid to those lacking the necessities of life. The Portland Council’s Emergency Services office serves clients in Clackamas and Multnomah counties, and in part of Washington County.
Position Summary
The Program Specialist arranges aid for clients in need, and guides volunteers in assisting the operation. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with people from all backgrounds is required, including the ability to remain calm and focused in times of stress. Compassion and sound judgment are essential. Must be at ease working face-to-face and over the phone with people in crisis including those who are addicts, hungry, homeless, or facing the loss of housing or utilities. Must be a problem-solver, who can find ways to overcome communication barriers and de-escalate tense situations.
We will train a team player with strong initiative, high energy, and a dedication to serving others. The ideal candidate will have a constant drive to perform at a high level with minimal supervision, along with excellent organizational aptitude and attention to detail. In addition to a strong aptitude with computers and office machines, the position requires the ability to motivate and train volunteers, and do occasional work receiving and carrying donated goods. The primary schedule is weekdays, but some evening and weekend work may occasionally be required.
Minimum Requirements
- High school diploma - some college preferred
- 18 years of age with two years or more of verifiable work history, preferably in a similar position
- Able to read and write English using proper punctuation and spelling
- Second language not required, but preference may be given to candidates with skill in another language
- Knowledge of programs for desktop computers and smartphones, including MS Office suite, pdf editors/readers, graphics editors, etc.
- Eager and able to quickly learn new technology
- Minimum keyboarding/typing speed of 25 wpm with fewer than 6 errors
- Ability to perform all functions stated in the job description including lifting, cleaning and other physical requirements
- Must pass a criminal background check and pre-employment drug screen
