JOB DESCRIPTION:

The Safety Engineer is responsible to provide leadership, counsel and perform as an effective facilitator to influence development of a proactive approach to safety and health. Develop procedures and design systems to protect people from illness and injury and property from damage. Combine knowledge of engineering and of health and safety to make sure that machinery, equipment, and other products will not cause harm to people or damage to property The ideal candidate will be self-motivated and thrive in a fast-paced work environment with complex operations.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:

- Act as a coach and mentor to managers in Safety leadership and assist them in executing their Safety responsibilities.

- Sustain existing management systems to ensure the effective execution of the Safety and Health Plan.

- Drive injury and fatality prevention and hazard assessment efforts and activities.

- Provide technical expertise in new equipment/facilities development by actively participating in Project Safety and Health reviews, audits, and internal self-assessments.

- Maintain and apply knowledge of current health and safety policies, Local, State, Federal, and Corporate Health and Safety regulations, and industrial processes.

- Review plans and specifications for new machinery and equipment to make sure that they meet safety requirements.

- Identify and correct potential hazards by inspecting facilities, machinery, and safety equipment.

- Evaluate the effectiveness of various industrial control mechanisms.

- Ensure that buildings or products comply with health and safety regulations, especially after an inspection that required changes.

- Install safety devices on machinery or direct the installation of these devices.

- Review employee safety programs and recommend improvements.

- Instruct others on Safety and Health programs, protocols, and criteria, by conducting safety audits and departmental safety observations.

- Provide technical expertise and participate in injury/incident investigations to assist in identifying root cause analysis and provide recommendations to prevent recurrence.

- Other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION/SKILL REQUIREMENTS:

- Bachelor's Degree in Safety Management or related sciences is preferred but consideration will be given to non-degreed candidates who possess equivalent work experience.

- Related experience in a manufacturing environment is preferred.

- Knowledge and proficiency of Microsoft Office, particularly Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint, Word, and MS Teams.

- Ability to learn and utilize ArcelorMittal Shelby systems and software.

- Ability to identify workplace safety hazards and conditions for job-related tasks.

- Ability to work effectively in a team environment and independently with minimal supervision.

- Excellent organizational skills, with precise attention to detail.

- Strong verbal, written, analytical and persuasive skills and the ability to interact effectively with all levels of employees and management.

- Demonstrates leadership skills, confidence, and fosters positive relationships.

- Willing and able to work nights, weekends and/or holidays.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Candidate must be available for potential travel, possess the physical ability to climb stairs, bend, stoop and move throughout the plant as needed, sit for long periods of time, perform repetitive movements, occasionally lift up to 30 pounds and possess the ability to hear and speak clearly, in English, in person and over the phone.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $62,000.00 - $80,000.00 per year
