Job Summary:

The Safety Officer (SOFR) is responsible for monitoring the overall operation of an incident from a risk management perspective and providing recommendations to mitigate hazards in order to provide for the welfare of assigned resources. The SOFR functions as a member of the Command Staff. The SOFR reports to the Incident Commander (IC) and works in the Command functional area. This position does not require relocation, but will be required for deployment nationwide if needed.


Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • The SOFR supervises Asst SOFRs and may supervise the Medical Unit Leader (MEDL) or other members in the safety organization.

Job Classification: Part time, call when needed


Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Follows the direction of the Incident Commander
  • Keeps the Incident Commander informed of any potential problems or items of note
  • Monitor performance and provide immediate and regular feedback to assigned personnel
  • Monitor incident operations and advise the IC or supervisor on matters relating to the health and safety of incident resources.
  • Correct unsafe acts or conditions through the regular line of authority, although direct intervention will be used to immediately correct a dangerous situation.
  • Post safety information around camp, as appropriate.
  • Monitor fatigue throughout incident personnel and make recommendations on operational period lengths to ensure work/rest guidelines are followed.
  • Conduct periodic inspections of base camp facilities.
  • Monitor health and wellness of incident personnel including fatigue, smoke exposure, illness, injury, property damage trends, excess stress, etc., and ensure mitigations are in place.

Required Skills and Abilities:

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills required
  • Knowledge of the Incident Command System (ICS) required
  • Ability to compose and present comprehensive reports required
  • Skilled in building relationships and trust with individuals required

Education and Experience:

  • Successful completion if ICS 100, 200, 700, 800, and 300 is required
  • Successful completion of the Position Specific Course (L-954 or S-404) is required
  • Safety Officer credential is preferred
  • Incident response experience is preferred
  • Prior experience serving as a Safety Officer is preferred
  • License verification and certifications must be provided at the time of application and can be emailed to certification@chloeta.com.

Physical Requirements:

  • Prolonged exposure to sitting or standing for long periods of time
  • Able to work up 12 to 16 hours per day
  • Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds
  • Must meet the physical requirements of the position up to and including 14 day deployments

Salary: $52.12 per hour

Pre-employment Requirements:

This position may be contingent upon passing a security clearance, criminal background check (state and federal), drug screen, Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) review, education verification, employment verification, and/or credit check after acceptance of an offer and prior to beginning work, due to the nature of the services Chloeta provides and the responsibilities of this position.


Drug and Alcohol Testing:

To enforce Chloeta’s Drug and Alcohol Testing Policy, an employee or candidate could be subject to undergoing a drug screen and/or alcohol testing at the beginning of employment, as well as after commencement of employment where there is reasonable suspicion of intoxication, or following an automobile or other accident, or as part of a company or facility-wide random drug screen process.


Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA):

Under the FCRA, Chloeta may request a credit check during the onboarding process. A written authorization form will be required before obtaining credit records.


Emergency Response:

Every Chloeta employee has regular and recurring emergency management responsibilities, though not every position requires routine deployment to disaster sites. All positions are subject to recall around the clock for emergency management operations, which may require irregular work hours, work at locations other than the official Duty Station, and may include duties other than those specified in the employee's official Position Description (PD). Travel requirements in support of emergency operations may be extensive in nature (weeks to months), with little advance notice, and may require employees to relocate to emergency sites with physically austere and operationally challenging conditions.
