Position Summary

This position is responsible for designing electrical and electronic architecture for Lightning eMotors’ vehicles, powertrains, and other products used in automotive applications. The person in this position will be working to create low voltage, high voltage, and communication architecture for multiple LeM Platforms.

Responsibilities

  • Design schematics to show all electrical connections between different E/E components on the vehicle
  • Size and select power distribution components
  • Design the high voltage bus and create standards, requirements, and specifications pertaining to the bus design
  • Track and report on key performance indicators (KPIs) of the E/E architecture
  • Maintain electrical profiles of components that are integrated into the E/E architecture
  • Perform safety and failure analysis of the E/E design
  • Create bus level simulations of the vehicle to analyze electrical transients such as active and passive discharge, pre-charge, short circuits, etc.
  • Perform the integration of E/E components that need to be connected to the vehicle’s E/E architecture
  • Help familiarize junior engineers with E/E architecture and work products
  • Develop and implement scripts to perform consistency checks and verifications on design files and vehicle logs
  • Collaborate with controls engineers to facilitate proper control of E/E components
  • Develop troubleshooting guidelines in coordination with Service Engineers for fielded vehicles
  • Mentor and provide technical direction for junior engineers, including familiarizing them with E/E work products
  • Other duties as assigned

  • Time management: Ability to manage multiple priorities simultaneously, meet deadlines, remain organized, and focused on work in a manufacturing environment; as well as maintain accuracy and high attention to detail in fast-paced environment.
  • Teamwork: Work with cross-functional teams and build strong partnerships with other employees. Be motivated to follow-through on projects as an individual and teammate.

What we require:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineer, or a related field of study; or equivalent work experience in a directly related role
  • At least 5 years of experience in related role
  • Demonstrated experience generating system boundary diagrams, electrical schematics, and DFMEAs
  • Experience with power electronics
  • Demonstrated experience writing component and system requirements and specifications

What we prefer:

  • Demonstrated experience and understanding with EV system architecture and components including automotive electrical and electronic architecture
  • Understanding of automotive safety standards and best practices such as ISO26262 and SAE J2910
  • PTC Creo experience and other 3D CAD systems

Successful candidates will be evaluated based on the following experience, skills, and abilities:

  • Experience with BOM management and PLM system
  • Experience with CAN bus diagnostics and data logging with CANalyzer, PCAN, and/or Kvaser
  • Experience with control logic in Simulink, LabVIEW, Raptor, Motohawk, C/C++, or Python
  • Experience with high-voltage DC systems, specifically PHEV, EV, or FCEV applications and their safety precautions
  • Experience with APQP tools

Engineering levels: all degrees should be in an Engineering related course of study

  • Engineer levels I and II: up to 2 years of professional experience combined with a Bachelor’s, or an advance degree combined with some work experience
  • Senior: minimum of 5 years of experience with a Bachelor’s; or 3 years of experience with a Master’s degree; or a PhD; or equivalent work experience
  • Lead: Minimum of 8 years of experience with a Bachelor’s; or 6 years of experience with a Master’s; or 3 years with a PhD; or equivalent work experience

Physical Demands and abilities

  • Ability to lift 30-50 pounds
  • Regularly perform repetitive tasks, including prolonged periods seated at a desk
  • Must be able to bend, stoop, squat, crouch, climb, kneel, and twist
  • Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus
