Maintain and repair building systems and equipment applying basic skills in plumbing, painting, carpentry and vehicle maintenance. May act as primary point of contact for emergency repairs on second shift and/or major events. Essential Duties and Responsibilities: • Assists various tradesmen, such as plumber, carpenter, electrician, painter, HVAC, irrigation specialists, vehicle mechanic in the performance of all aspects of their assigned tasks and functions.

Provides related maintenance and repairs in absence of primary trades person or during periods of high demand. • Demonstrates good judgment in determining best course of action to make repairs especially on the second shift when contacted by security to address emergency situations including plumbing leaks and/or power outages. • Perform spring start up and winter shut down of all water features and provides daily services and chemical treatment. • Replaces light bulbs, ballasts and repairs lighting fixtures up to 277 voltages.

  • Repair restroom fixtures and dispensers and respond to services calls from Facility Support Services especially on second shift. • Make repairs to office furnishings and/or move offices equipment, computers and supplies, recycling and warehousing. • Performs cleaning of all roofs, gutters, and path drains. • Maintains inventory of critical supplies such as light bulbs, ballasts, and pool chemicals and will schedule delivery and make parts runs as required.
  • Participates in set up and take down of all major exhibits, functions, and special events and responds to any and all second shift emergency requests. • Operate various types of lift equipment for warehousing, maintenance, set up and take downs for events and festivals. • Collects, packages and arranges shipping of various recyclable items including bulbs, batteries, and other building components. • Supports tram operation by exchanging empty propane tanks as needed especially on the second shift.
  • Ensures that all applicable safety standards are followed: informs employees/students/volunteers of safety guidelines and safe working practices and routinely monitors to enforce them. • Adapts or modifies work methods to reduce hazards. • Reports all accidents, injuries and near-miss accidents immediately. • Behaves and communicates in a manner that promotes and fosters a culture of teamwork and cooperation, within our division and throughout the Garden, with co-workers, supervisors/managers, volunteers, visitors and employees.
  • Performs other duties as assigned. Supervisory Responsibilities: None. Qualifications/Experience: • Minimum of three (3) to five (5) years experience in general maintenance.
  • Knowledge of various trades with emphasis on basic vehicle mechanics, plumbing, irrigation, painting, light carpentry and electrical. • Ability to safely operate a wide variety of equipment including fork truck, lift equipment and hand tools. • Must handle, store and maintain critical supplies such as pool chemicals and light bulbs. • Must wear appropriate personal protective equipment and comply with lock out tag out procedures.
  • Knowledge of acceptable safe work practices including the use of various fountain chemicals; lock out tag out procedures, the proper use of hand tools, and safe operation of various lifts and other moving equipment including fork truck. • Ability to work independently with little instruction; coordinate and prioritize multiple tasks, set deadlines, and complete projects in a timely manner. • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively at all levels; must enjoy and feel comfortable interacting and working in close proximity to general public, in a safe and friendly manner. • Scheduling flexibility that allows working some weekends, evenings and holidays is required.

Computer Skills: • Ability to use Internet to search for new products and/or methods and to obtain manufactures’ literature and required material safety data sheets (MSDS).
  • Ability to close out work orders using TMA and look up electronic records. • Familiarity navigating through various PC applications including but not restricted to Microsoft Office suite (i.e. Outlook, Word, etc.) • Ability to use e-mail to communicate with Garden staff in order to answer questions and service their needs. Other Skills and Abilities: N/A Language Skills: • Ability to communicate effectively in English (verbal and written).
  • Ability to read and comprehend instructions and information to effectively execute and achieve results. Mathematical Skills: • H.S. basic math required for inventory, warehousing, and chemical treatment (i.e., addition, subtraction, multiplication and division). Reasoning Ability: • Requires ability to exercise independent judgment to apply facts and principles for developing approaches and techniques to problem resolution.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: • Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license and clean insurable driving record (prior to employment). • Ability to obtain and maintain a valid chauffeur’s license within (2) months of hire date is required. • Ability to obtain Certified pool-Spa Operator certificate • Must be able to obtain and maintain certification to operate 85’ boom lifts, 65’ articulating lifts, scissors lifts up to 40’ • Must be able to obtain and maintain certification to operate a forklift/stockpicker Physical Demands: • Ability to climb ladders and work at varying heights up to four stories and to operate a wide variety of personal lifts equipment articulating boom, stick boom, scissors lifts’ and fork truck/stock picker. • Ability to work outdoors for extended period of time during all seasons of the year.

  • Ability to wear personal protective equipment, including fall restraint. • Ability to lift at least 75 lbs and work with various pieces of equipment off ladders and/or lifts and over head. • Requires clarity of vision at 20 inches or less with the ability to bring objects into sharp focus. • Requires standing, walking, bending, stooping and reaching for extended periods of time-- 95% or more of the workday is standing on feet.
  • Requires hand digging for extended periods of time and some work maybe performed in trenches or holes which will require shoring. • Ability to utilize computer keyboard (typing). Work Environment: • Work maybe performed in maintenance shop, finished spaces or in and around general construction conditions. • Work is performed at varying heights, around energized and moving equipment, and in all weather conditions for extended periods of time.
  • Work is performed using saws and other moving equipment which may generate dust and noise. • Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions (i.e., in temperatures over 100°F as well as temperatures below 0°F, in rain, snow and other inclement weather conditions as needed). • Some tasks maybe performed in confined spaces. • Must be able to work on and within greenhouses and around other large areas of glass.
  • Comfortable working in immediate proximity to general public, in a safe and friendly manner. Contacts with Individuals/Organizations inside/outside the Garden: • Members of the Maintenance Department. • Garden staff in areas where work is being performed. • Architects and/or engineers during major renovations and new construction.
  • Outside contractors and vendors to obtain supplies and services. • Visitors, volunteers and the general public.
