General Summary

We are hiring lateral applicants to our Court Services Bureau (CSB). Applicants for this Bureau may be assigned to Court Security, Transports & Extraditions, or the Community Transition Center (CTC).

Transports is responsible for securing and transporting inmates to court, doctor’s appointments, and to all other CJ facilities. The Transports and Extradition Deputy is responsible for all security and custody aspects of inmates and the managing members of the public in and around their location.

Community Transition Center: The CTC Deputy is responsible for the supervision of participants in the Sheriff’s Community Transition Center. The CTC Deputy will preserve the security of the facility, perform searches, make arrests, monitor and verify participant locations, perform drug and alcohol testing, and other duties as needed.

Court Security is responsible for policing the Ada County Courthouse Campus (ACCC). The Deputy is responsible for all security aspects of the ACCC, ensuring that the judges and judicial staff, court employees and general public visiting the courthouse are safe.

The Deputy will work closely with the Police Services Bureau and Jail Services Bureau along with the Courts and other key criminal justice stakeholders. The position is within the Court Services Bureau of the Ada County Sheriff’s Office

Essential Functions

  • Maintains security and custody of inmates;
  • Maintains security of ACCC, CTC, and those on premises
  • Preserves and enforces Idaho laws and departmental policies to maintain security;
  • Performs security and perimeter checks;
  • Monitors facilities’ surveillance cameras;
  • Provide security for Judges, or staff, when necessary in any court facility;
  • Maintains vigilance for suspicious activity;
  • Responds to and investigates calls and complaints involving anything criminal or civil occurring in and around the ACCC and CTC
  • Securing and searching prisoners in preparation for transport;
  • Transportation of inmates to court, doctor’s appointments, and other CJ facilities;
  • Management of inmates in courtrooms, exam rooms, and holding facilities;
  • Managing members of the public in and around the Courthouse;
  • Assist with Video Court Hearings inside the Jail facility;
  • De-escalate confrontational situations;
  • Removes disruptive people from premises and makes arrests;
  • Serves warrants and takes person(s) into custody;
  • Keeps records and prepares reports;
  • Testifies as a witness in court in connection with arrests and citations;
  • Works closely with contract security to ensure proper screening is being completed;
  • Works closely with court staff to ensure the safe operation of the court functions and hearings;
  • Works and maintains close contact and relationships with other CSB employees assigned to the ACCC.

Job Requirements

  • Must be a certified Peace Officer with at least two (2) years' commissioned experience to qualify as a lateral transfer;
  • Must be at least 21 years of age;
  • Must be able to read, interpret, and memorize large amounts of information relating to policies, procedures, laws, and police operations;
  • Knowledge of English grammar, spelling, and punctuation;
  • Skill in the peaceful resolution of conflict and diffusing tense situations;
  • Skill in safely operating passenger cars, vans, or motorcycles under hazardous conditions;
  • Ability to hear, listen to, and understand radio transmissions using an ear piece;
  • Ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing, and prepare clear, comprehensive reports;
  • Ability to give accurate and credible testimony in court;
  • Ability to take criticism and verbal abuse from persons without reacting in a negative manner;
  • Ability to project an image of self-confidence and control;
  • Ability to evaluate and recognize potentially adverse or unsafe situations and react according to department policy;
  • Ability to perform the duties of the position without a direct threat to the health or safety of the incumbent or others;
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
Other Requirements
  • Must pass a written exam, the POST physical agility test, a polygraph exam, background investigation, medical exam, and a psychological evaluation;
  • Must become POST Basic Peace Officer Certified as a Court Services Deputy within one year of employment;
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain an Idaho Driver’s License and Idaho CDL;
  • This position has been designated safety sensitive and therefore the incumbent is subject to random drug testing.

Work Environment & Physical Demands

  • Much of the work is performed in and around the Ada County Courthouse Campus and involves an element of personal danger;
  • The work requires sufficient physical strength to extract injured persons from a variety of situations and to apprehend individuals, some of whom may resist;
  • At times the work requires movement over various indoor and outdoor terrains: e.g. multiple floors/stairs, hilly, steep, rocky, rough, wet, or slippery surfaces;
