Departmental Overview

Established in 2007 as a partnership between UC Berkeley, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL), University of Illinois, Urbana-Champagne (UIUC), and energy company BP, the Energy & Biosciences Institute (EBI) now targets industry sponsors from across the energy, chemical, agricultural, construction, and mining sectors. Our main research focus is to explore research and education toward a clean energy future. The EBI is an academic research unit of significant scope and resources. The EBI at Berkeley serves as the main administrative coordinating arm for research and industry partner activities, as well as additional external partners. Essentially, three locations operate as one organization providing access across the UC system and beyond. Therefore, the scope of the EBI reaches well beyond the campus, extending to the national and international energy arena. The EBI is entirely self-funded and recently renewed a five-year, multi-million-dollar partnership with a global energy provider. The EBI is focused on a three-pillar mission: research, education and entrepreneurship.
