ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT
The Colorado Department of Public Safety (CDPS) consists of five Divisions: Colorado Bureau of Investigation (CBI), Colorado State Patrol (CSP), Division of Criminal Justice (DCJ), Division of Fire Prevention and Control (DFPC), and the Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Management (DHSEM). The Executive Director's Office (EDO) provides administrative and management services to the operating divisions of the department.
EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR'S OFFICE
The Executive Director's Office is the backbone of the Colorado Department of Public Safety, providing effective administrative and management services to the Department's five operating divisions. The EDO includes the following:
- The Executive Director and Deputy Executive Director – Oversees strategic direction and operations for the department.
- Financial Services - Provides accounting, procurement, budget, payroll, payment and other financial services to support the operations and programs of CDPS divisions.
- Human Resources - Supports recruitment, hiring, evaluation, benefits management, personnel actions and all other human resources functions.
- Planning and Communications Unit – Oversees strategic planning, public information, open records, internal communications, and legislative relationships for the Department.
- Fleet and Facilities Management – Manages and maintains CDPS vehicles and facilities.
- Compliance and Professional Standards – Develops policies, assesses and manages risk, and ensures compliance with state and federal requirements and professional standards.
- Colorado Integrated Criminal Justice Information Systems – develops cost-effective information sharing services to provide access for criminal justice agencies while maintaining information security. CICJIS is a collaborative program designed to facilitate information sharing at key decision points in the criminal justice process. There are five participating CICJIS agencies: the Department of Corrections, Judicial, the Colorado District Attorneys Council, the Division of Youth Corrections, and the Colorado Bureau of Investigation.
- Colorado School Safety Resource Center – assists local schools and communities to create safe and positive school climates for pre-k through higher education schools in Colorado.

ABOUT THE WORK UNIT
The Logistics Services Section (LSS) provides integrated management of the department’s facilities, automotive fleet, materials, and capital projects through customer focused actions which empower the dedicated members of the Department to safeguard lives. There are five major branches that comprise the section: Materials Management Branch (Warehouse), Fleet Management Branch, Facilities Management Branch, Capital Development and Planning Branch and the Wildland Fire Logistics Branch. Members of these five branches, plus the Logistics Services headquarters section, provide daily production and support for the equipment and infrastructure necessary to sustain operations for the divisions assigned to the Colorado Department of Public Safety.
The Facilities Management Branch within the LSS provides the Department with a variety of facilities services; including, capital development & planning, property management, leasing, buildings and grounds maintenance, and space management. The work unit provides for a safe, high-quality physical work environment by maintaining buildings and grounds in compliance with acceptable professional standards.
JOB DESCRIPTION
This position works under the supervision of the Facilities Branch Manager and is assigned day-to-day work tasks necessary to maintain and preserve CDPS facilities in a safe and sound habitable condition. This is accomplished by identifying, troubleshooting, and repairing damaged, missing, or failing building components. The preventative maintenance purpose involves testing and replacing items before they fail. This position primarily supports CDPS facilities on Camp George West in Golden, but may occasionally be called upon to assist at other CDPS locations in the Denver-Metro area.
POSITION DUTIES
Facility / Building Maintenance
Performs skilled and semi-skilled trades; including, building maintenance services, grounds services and facility preventative maintenance services for the flooring (e.g. tile, gym wood, workout mats), plumbing, painting, lighting and locksmith duties. Work includes installation, alteration, maintenance of buildings and grounds required for the safe operation of CDPS facilities on and around Camp George West. The preventative maintenance, construction, renovation and repair programs, include carpentry, electrical, plumbing, HVAC, snow removal, welding, grounds (e.g. grass, trees, walkways, parking lots, and common areas) and general building components such as windows, doors, roofs and furniture.
- Assess issues with equipment by performing preventative maintenance talks from scheduled work on CMMS. Repair or replace equipment and document time and materials used. Documents 100% of work hours and materials purchased in the CMMS system.
Inspections and Auditing
As required by State Buildings, inspects building and facility equipment to determine requirements for the maintenance, repair needs and costs of the CDPS facilities on or around Camp George West. Reads, interprets and works from sketches, diagrams and blueprints for planning new or modifying existing facilities, flooring, ceiling and wall systems for construction and maintenance. Acts as a Subject Matter Expert for any structural deficiencies, or construction related issues. Conducts weekly “FOD” walks around Camp George West, and assesses landscaping requirements.
Assist Other Trades
Performs semi-skilled construction trade work including minor electrical, plumbing and HVAC tasks. Assist trades staff and Capitol Development Unit team as needed.
- The building mechanic assists electrical trades with pipe bending, running wire, and replacing components. Also assists pipe trades with cleaning coils, replacing filters, and minor plumbing.
Troubleshooting and Repair
Troubleshoot and repair equipment and systems, fire sprinkler, safety alarm systems, locks/keys, Kitchen equipment, HVAC, Boilers, plumbing fixtures, lighting and furnishings.
- A work order is assigned to the Tech, with the description of toilet not flushing; tech decides to replace internal components or entire Vacuum breaker assembly.
Event Coordination
The building mechanic will order supplies, chairs, tables, tents and any other materials required for events conduction on Camp George West primarily in support of the Colorado State Patrol. Assists in the set-up and break-down of all goods and design layout of tables and chairs for each event. Assists Camp George West customers with basic A.V. or technology needs or problems.
- A promotion assembly is planned for quarter number 2, The building mechanic will design layout and order needed supplies and coordinate with customer on additional needs and logistics of the event.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
- Must be able to read, understand, follow, and give oral and written instructions.
- This position will routinely be exposed to and is expected to interact with armed law enforcement officers while conducting daily business.
- Tools, uniforms and personal protective equipment are provided by employer.
Minimum Qualifications, Substitutions, Conditions of Employment & Appeal Rights
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE):

THIS POSITION WILL BE UPGRADED TO STRUCTURAL TRADES II LEVEL UPON SUCCESSFULL TRAINING (SIX MONTHS TO ONE YEAR)
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Two years of experience as building mechanic and maintenance, repair equipment and systems such as fire sprinkler, safety alarm systems, locks/keys, Kitchen equipment, HVAC, Boilers, plumbing fixtures, lighting and furnishings
SUBSTITUTIONS:
- Appropriate education or successful completion of a formalized apprenticeship program will substitute for the required experience on a year-for-year basis.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Advanced skills in computer software and applications (i.e. MS Office products such as Word, Excel, Outlook, and SharePoint).
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
- Excellent problem-solving skills with a strong ability to manage multiple and changing priorities.
- Highly organized, resourceful with strong attention to detail.
- The ideal candidate can perform manual dexterity (general physical activities that require considerable use of arms and legs and moving of the whole body, such as climbing, lifting, balancing, walking, stooping and handling of materials.)
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
- Requires successful completion of a background investigation that will include a polygraph, a criminal history check and a drug test.
- Current valid driver's license at time of hire, and must obtain a Colorado-issued driver's license within 6 months of hire.
