Position Summary:
Assistant Unit Leaders (AULs) are responsible for oversight of campers in their assigned unit. They ensure campers are safe and comfortable and ensure that all activities are fulfilled and create a great experience for campers. Assistant Unit Leaders will also support Activity Lead staff with planning and leading activities for campers as needed. Due to close contact and overnight supervision of a Girl Scout youth population in this residential setting, the Summer Camp Assistant Unit Leader must be female.

AULs may be asked to specialize in one of the following:

  • Adventure Specialists
  • Trip Specialist
  • Counselor in Training Specialist
  • Lifeguard Specialist

AUL’s who specialize on camp will still be required to fill the role of a general AUL when specialty is not required.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assume responsibility for the health and safety of the campers in the unit by: maintaining a well-equipped first aid kit, maintaining supervision of campers, reporting accidents promptly, and keeping the health supervisor informed of the health status of campers and unit staff.
  • Awaken campers on time and communicate proper attire for the day.
  • Teach camping skills and appreciation of the outdoors to campers.
  • Through use of girl planning and in conjunction with other unit staff, assist in planning and carrying out of experiences within the unit.
  • Help to coordinate and successfully implement group living for the unit by working together and assisting with housekeeping, sanitation, and care and use of supplies/equipment.
  • Help to keep written records and make formal reports as required; ensure all documentation and reports are completed and submitted on time in accordance with established deadlines.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Work with Summer CampActivity leaders and Summer CampProgram Supervisor to develop and implement programming based on camp program goals, individual goals, assigned activities, and camp policies and procedures.
  • Lead or assist assigned activities to encourage personal growth, learned skills, and creativity, and provide challenges appropriate to age, ability, and readiness for multiple GS levels.
  • Assist in inventory procedures at the opening and close of camp.
  • Abide by GSHPA code of conduct, rules, and expectations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications, Skills & Abilities:

  • Minimum 18 years of age.
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Demonstrated ability to motivate girls to participate in activities and lead activities in a flexible, professional manner and in accordance with GSHPA strategies.
  • Prior experience or acquire on-camp training in one or more of the following activity areas:
  • Current Lifeguard certification (or approved equivalent) or ability to pass during pre-camp training (Lifeguard)
  • Ability to pass pre-camp Adventure Course Training (Adventure Specialist)
  • Leave no trace, camping, and wilderness first aid experience preferred (Trip Specialist)
  • Past experience working with teens in a leadership capacity (Counselor in Training specialist)
  • Counselor Choice Activities – Camp staff provide additional activities based on their own personal specialties not included above during activity sessions and unit times (example: crafts, steam, dramatic arts, outdoor skills, music, etc...)
  • Attend and complete pre-camp trainings.
  • Experience working with children preferred.
  • Ability to live and work in the outdoors in extreme weather conditions.
  • Ability to walk a mile over uneven terrain.
  • Visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards.
  • Ability to adapt well to changing circumstances, direction, and strategy.
  • Ability to lead and facilitate events and activities.
  • Ability to work with diverse populations in a group setting.
  • Strong verbal communication skills.
  • Must be able to pass required background checks.
  • Must present a current form of ID affirming female gender at time of hire.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends.
  • Ability to lift at least 50 lbs.
