Supervisor of Custodians

REPORTS TO

Director of Facilities or designee

PRIMARY FUNCTION

  • Provide lead direction and management of assigned custodians and the successful coordination and execution of the assigned building(s) needs related to building and grounds cleanliness, custodial staff scheduling, custodial supplies/inventory, work order management, workplace safety, equipment maintenance and needs, staff training, and all other building operations related to facilities management.
  • Identify, assign, monitor, manage, and ensure successful completion (close out) of the work of the custodial staff on all shifts in assigned building(s) and will to perform additional related custodial management duties as assigned by supervisor.
  • Provide management and lead direction to building custodians as related to shift coverage, overtime, daily, weekly, monthly, seasonal, and annual work, special events, building use needs, and equipment/inventory condition reports.
  • Provide management, training, and coordination for the successful execution of the district’s custodial program and requires a responsible nature requiring a high level of independence, planning, and judgment.
  • Manages custodians, custodial inventory, district staff requests in assigned building(s), building use and planning, completion of periodic building maintenance needs, interacts with vendors, local and state officials, and district administrators to facilitate communications and ensure department efficiency and completion of assigned area needs.

CERTIFICATION / LICENSE

Motor Vehicle Operator’s License or ability to provide own transportation.

EDUCATION

Bachelor’s degree preferred.

EXPERIENCE

  • Experience in the education field and knowledge of the school system custodial functions.
  • 3-5 year of increasingly responsible custodial experience.

  • Ability to independently carry out projects and programs and to make judgment calls within assigned area of responsibility.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with all levels of the organization.
  • Ability to establish and maintain inspections, inventory, work orders, and other administrative logs.
  • Ability to compose clear and correct letters and reports.
  • Ability to efficiently schedule and coordinate staffing, meetings, and events.
  • Ability to process received shipping and ordering paperwork accurately and efficiently.
  • Ability to relate positively to staff members, students, parents and the public.
  • Ability to perform data and word processing functions.
  • Ability to perform independently and manage assigned staff effectively.
  • Ability to work under difficult time constraints and able to handle pressure situations.
  • Demonstrates the ability to work effectively, professionally and courteously, and maintain favorable relationships with all level of administration.
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft software’s, and any other applicable programs.
  • Ability to take directives and follow through independently as well as work as a team member who is flexible and adaptable.
  • Ability to work and meet the changing and demanding needs and goals of the facilities department.
  • Demonstrates the ability to consistently make decisions in accordance with policies and procedures.

ESSENTIAL PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Ensure proper and timely communications with all related facilities staff and facilities departments to ensure work needs are identified, planned and completed in assigned building(s).
  • Inputs and ensures work order accuracy. At the direction of the Director of Facilities or designee, enters, monitors and updates the assigned building(s) needs related to work order system to ensure accuracy and timely resolution to work order requests. Communicates with the Director of Facilities or designee on outstanding issues and work order prioritization needs.
  • Maintains timely inspections and provides reports to supervisor and administration regarding assigned building(s) readiness, planning, and completion related to all building facility needs.
  • Tracks, coordinates, schedules and retains all required department training and safety documentation.
  • Works in conjunction with management to develop, implement and maintain policies and procedure consistent with current best practices related to accounting operations and workflows.
  • Provides and coordinates the usage of school facilities, dispatching and general office management. Performs a range of responsible duties in support of the effective operation of the Facilities Department.
  • Receives oral or written directions from supervisor.
  • Plans, schedules and coordinates work assignments and special projects with vendors and facilities staff.

Assigns overtime and plans custodial scheduling with assistance and approval of supervisor and per union contract.

  • Independently composes letters and reports.
  • Prepares agendas, minutes, notices and meeting or conference materials.
  • Maintains strict confidentiality of information as needed.
  • Transmits and explains supervisor’s directives to designated persons, and follows up for compliance, completeness, and conformance to deadlines.
  • Schedules periodic review meetings and periodic building walk through for supervisor and administration.
  • Compiles and coordinates needed building data for action by supervisor. Takes the lead on building need identification.
  • Makes decisions in the absence of supervisor regarding routine custodial and building matters. Notifies supervisor of decision in timely manner.
  • Performs special assignments, projects, and routine custodial coordination functions as directed.
  • Reports work accomplished to supervisor in a timely manner.
  • Maintains records of custodial and building work performed, building needs, and received documentation for operational projects and supplies.

ADDITIONAL DUTIES

Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor or his/her designee.

EQUIPMENT

  • Uses technology to assist in preparing reports and presentations including personal computer and appropriate software, printer, digital camera, scanner.
  • Uses other standard office equipment.

TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS

May be required to travel between assigned buildings in the district.

SALARY & BENEFITS

Salary and benefits as set forth in the Local 818 collective bargaining agreement.

WORK SCHEDULE

  • 10:00 am - 6:30 pm
  • Work schedule as set forth in the Local 818 contract.
  • 40-hour work week.
  • Twelve-month work year

Grant funded. This is a one-year grant funded position.
