JOB DESCRIPTION *

The IT Security System Administrator will be responsible for effective provisioning, installation, configuration, operation, and maintenance of system hardware and software in addition to related infrastructure that are in support of the IT Risk Management Office at the John H. Glenn Research Center (GRC). This individual will be responsible for technical research and development to enable continuing innovation within the IT infrastructure. This individual will ensure that system hardware, operating systems, software systems, and related procedures adhere to standard IT security standards defined by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). This individual will lead and support project teams to develop and improve systems, services and technologies provided by the IT Risk Management office. Duties include:

  • Accountable for administrating a wide range of operating systems, including, but not limited to Linux, Windows, and OSX.
  • Accountable for administering and supporting services including, but not limited to websites, web applications, databases, and file sharing services.
  • Responsible for understanding and implementing policies, procedures and standards required by the FISMA Act of 2002.
  • Responsible for maintaining documentation for the systems owned by the IT Risk Management Office including documentation for recovery & reconstitution, configuration management, inventory control, and network/system layout diagrams.
  • Responsible for conforming to routine IT Security assessments using the NIST framework such that security risks can be remediated, vulnerabilities addressed, and security posture improved.
  • Responsible for enhancing the security posture of IT systems including, but not limited to security patches, infrastructure assessments, system monitoring, security baselines, and ensuring the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of the systems owned by the IT Risk Management Office.
  • Responsible for continuous improvement of systems and services by utilizing methodologies and techniques that conform to industry best practices in IT security.
  • Perform daily system monitoring, verifying the integrity and availability of all hardware, server resources, systems, and key processes, reviewing system and application logs, and verifying completion of scheduled jobs such as backups.
  • Perform regular security monitoring to identify system irregularities, system errors and possible unauthorized access.
  • Provide IT security support per request from various constituencies to ensure they are conforming to IT security policies, procedures, and standards.
  • Repair and recover from hardware or software failures. Including coordination and communication to impacted constituencies.
  • Apply operating system patches, software patches, updates, and upgrades on a regular basis.
  • Configure and enhance new and existing services.
  • Create and maintain operational documentation, configuration baselines, and other required processes and procedures.
  • Perform periodic performance reporting to support capacity planning.
  • Perform ongoing performance tuning, hardware upgrades, and resource optimization as required.
  • Maintain equipment and process changes of systems in conformance with standard configuration management best practices. This may include reporting outages (software/service/hardware) to a change control board.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • 5-10 years of experience
  • Strong System Administration skills
  • Strong communication, written and verbal, analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Strong teamwork qualities with the ability to establish and maintain solid working relationships with peers, customers, and management.
