Overview:

Sappi North America is looking for an experienced tax professional to join our corporate finance team. This position will be responsible for all aspects of U.S. federal, state, local and related international income tax compliance and income tax accounting processes and reporting. This position is also responsible for maintaining internal controls for the tax area and providing advice and support on indirect taxation matters and compliance with reporting on US and international transfer pricing, as needed. The Tax Manager will report directly to the Director Treasury and Tax and work closely with other members of the finance and operations teams within the company. Accountabilities:

  • Manage the US tax compliance process which includes the preparation, review and filing of US federal, international (including 5472, 1120-F and 1042 and other related supporting documentation), state and other local corporate income tax returns; Perform tax compliance and prepare tax filing of tax related schedules and calculations needed for Canada and provincial corporate income tax returns.
  • Preparation and review of the quarterly income tax provision work papers including maintenance of effective tax rate schedules, flux analysis and monthly reconciliation of deferred and current tax balances and other tax related balance sheet items.
  • Prepare needed state tax allocation and other apportionment and workpapers to support nexus analysis in preparation of filing state income tax returns.
  • Ensures compliance with capital asset depreciation rules and regulations relative to tax reporting and planning for US federal, state and applicable Canadian corporate income tax returns.
  • Preparation and review of annual federal, state and other local tax extensions and quarterly estimated tax calculations and related payments.
  • Analysis of tax law changes, court decisions, proposed legislation, and other tax related developments for the US and Canada; assist with needed modeling based on US and Canada tax reform proposals.
  • Help advise and assist on US and International transfer pricing and planning initiatives and related reporting in the US and Canada and other cross border transactions and services within the Company.
  • Provide indirect tax support and analysis regarding sales and use tax compliance and needed customer exemption and resale certificate.
  • Work closely with internal and external tax advisors.
  • Research complex tax issues and prepare adhoc reporting for Management.
  • Implement process improvements across data collection, documentation, data submission, and information reporting processes; identify opportunities to leverage SAP to improve the tax function.
  • Respond to general queries from company’s manufacturing and sales groups on miscellaneous tax issues, e.g., withholding tax, nexus, sales and use, etc.
  • Resolve discrepancies and adjustments with tax authorities; prepare audit responses with assistance from tax director and finance teams.
  • Assist with the implementation of any strategic tax planning for US federal/state and international tax jurisdictions. Participate in cross-regional/global discussions regarding development and implementation of taxes processes, planning and strategies.

Required skills and abilities:

  • Ability to work within matrixed, cross functional teams to deliver results on business initiatives; capable of building relationships and to influence across functions and levels.
  • Demonstrated critical thinking and analytical capabilities; a sound knowledge of financial and tax accounting concepts and principles, detail oriented.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills needed.
  • Strong progressive roles and responsibilities in tax related functions preferred.
  • High level of self-management and motivation to continually improve the systems, structures and processes used in the tax area. Ability to drive change.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple and competing priorities.
  • High level of self-management and motivation with a strong sense of urgency and drive for results.
  • Solid understanding of US GAAP and IFRS accounting standards; Strong knowledge of income tax accounting (ASC740 & IAS12) and strong knowledge of U.S. federal and state income tax laws and concepts.
  • Transfer pricing planning and technical expertise in and understanding of US, OECD and local transfer pricing laws and regulations, and knowledge of other cross-functional tax matters.
  • Familiarity with SAP and other large scale ERP systems, a plus.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office especially Excel and Word and related functionality.
  • Ability to prioritize, multi-task and adhere to tight deadlines and work independently while successfully delivering results.
