*Salary Grade Equivalent: NC05* Recruitment Range: $31,200.00 - $54,101.00

This position is located in the Whiteville Bridge Maintenance Unit. This position is manual and equipment operational work involved in the maintenance and replacement of bridges, pipe, and reinforced concrete box culverts. Work includes a wide variety of skills utilized in the functional area including: pile driving, carpentry, concrete work, machine operation, contract inspection, repair of culverts, bridges, large pipe bulkheads and pipe clusters; sandblasting & paint, demolition work, trenching and shoring, lead paint removal and steel fabrication and straightening of steel beams.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

Applicants must submit an application that clearly reflects work experience that demonstrates the following:


  • Experience in pipe installation and installation of erosion control devices
  • Experience in the layout of traffic control in work zones
  • Working knowledge of standard bridge maintenance and construction procedures
  • Working knowledge of Intermediate Work Zone Safety and Workplace safety policies
  • Experience in one of the following: shoulder and ditch maintenance, pipe installation, asphalt patching, or snow and ice removal
Additional Expectations

Operate assigned equipment effectively. Keep appropriate records of work accomplished. Perform manual labor tasks for extended periods of time. Communicate effectively with co-workers. Ability to withstand extreme weather and terrain conditions while performing duties. Ability to work in close proximity of high volumes of traffic and heavy construction equipment. Operate a State vehicle. Safety toe shoes required. A valid North Carolina Class A Commercial Driver’s License with Tanker (N) endorsement is required for this position. CDL can be obtained through on-the-job training with 360 days to obtain a license. Pre-employment drug testing will be required. As a condition of employment, a release form (ALCDRG-01) and a background statement (ALCDRG-06) must be completed and signed allowing the NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past two years about controlled substances and alcohol testing. An inmate card approved by the NC Department of Public Safety must be issued to NCDOT employees to transport inmates. Must be able to obtain an inmate card. Applicants must undergo a criminal history check, complete necessary training, and orientation, and be at least 21 years of age.

Offer of employment will be contingent upon successful completion of NCDOT post offer employment evaluation.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

High school or General Educational Development diploma and three years of experience operating equipment directly related to the field of specialization; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Necessary Special Requirements: Either possession of a current Commercial Driver s License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver s License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire.
