The Cancer Support Community (CSC), the largest nonprofit provider of social and emotional support for people affected by cancer, is seeking a Vice President, Policy and Advocacy to lead its Cancer Policy Institute and its policy and advocacy work at the Federal and state level. The Cancer Policy Institute advances CSC’s mission to ensure that all people impacted by cancer are empowered by knowledge, strengthened by action and sustained by community. The Cancer Policy Institute brings together patient advocates and policy experts to ensure that the voices of cancer patients and their loved ones play a central role in federal and state legislative, regulatory, and executive policy making.

Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer, the Vice President will be accountable for all aspects of effective operations of CSC’s policy program, including fundraising and staff leadership. The Vice President will serve as a member of the CSC senior leadership team. This individual must have experience in policy and advocacy and be well-versed in translating evidence into actionable policy and advocacy initiatives. The ideal candidate should be an excellent communicator, possess a passion for and commitment to CSC’s mission, and show demonstrated success in managing a nonprofit organization, government agency or department, or business.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Lead the development and implementation of CSC’s regulatory and legislative priority agenda at the Federal and state level
  • Ensure efficient and effective operations of the Cancer Policy Institute, CSC’s policy and advocacy department, including staff supervision
  • Identify opportunities and secure resources across a diverse network of funding sources
  • Oversee CSC grassroots advocacy activities
  • Set and oversee the implementation of CSC’s policy research agenda
  • Engage with elected leaders and decision makers to communicate CSC’s priorities
  • Engage with peer oncology and health organizations to identify areas of consensus and to advocate collectively for positive change for people affected by cancer
  • Serve as a public face of CSC at policy-related and other meetings
  • Apply high quality standards to all internal and external communications
  • Interact regularly with CSC donors, partners, and stakeholders
  • Engage with CSC Network Partners across the United States
  • Other duties as assigned

Education/Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in related discipline – advanced degree preferred
  • 10 years of experience working with multiple and diverse partners, including but not limited to, elected officials, policy makers and staff, health care and business leaders, advocates, community organizers, field experts, funders, employers, and the media
  • Minimum of 5-7 years in a leadership position, with experience directly managing staff

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Strong project management and performance measurement skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including public speaking ability
  • Solid problem-solving and effective time management skills
  • Proficient skills in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to develop trusting, productive relationships with staff, partners, and donors
  • Cross-functional collaborator
  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to adhere to tight timetables
  • Conducts all work in an ethical, honest, and professional manner
  • Willing to travel 20 to 30% of the time
  • Exercises high degree of discretion and diplomacy in dealing with confidential or sensitive matters and materials
  • Initiative-taking, self-starting, team driven, customer service oriented, and a creative thinker
  • A proven interest in and commitment to the cancer community

WORK LOCATION*
This position is located in Washington, DC. You may work at CSC’s office in Washington, DC on a full-time basis or on a hybrid (in office/ work from home) schedule in the Washington, DC area.
