Position Summary
Accountable for all aspects of running the vineyard to achieve key business objectives, including employee health and safety, vineyard heath and fruit quality, grape supply and demand alignment, grape sales and custom farming, team coordination and collaboration with cross functional business units. Responsible for directing efficient and effective vineyard management practices that derive from a place of high-quality grape growing, focusing on plant health, soil nutrition, disease and pest management and viticultural innovation. Partners with Director and Accounting to develop and manage of capital and operating budgets that support the achievement of business objectives. Normally manages through subordinate supervisory/managerial levels in order to ensure the effective pursuit and completion of projects within budgetary guidelines while upholding high standards of excellence. Hires, directs, and ensures training for personnel in the areas of scheduling, farming operations, safety, rules and regulations related to vineyard functions. Identifies and develops leaders. Produces high quality and profitable wine-grapes, while ensuring respect for coworkers, the public and the land. The Vineyard Manager is expected to demonstrate exceptional leadership through modeling our company values and behaviors. Essential Functions
Safety
- Ensure safety program implementation within area that aligns to company wide standards.
- Ensure employees attend safety trainings, records attendance for all meetings.
- Ensures all vineyard activities are performed in a manner compliant with state, federal, local, company and CA Sustainable Winegrowing Alliance standards.
- Train and motivate employees in safe and efficient operating procedures.
- Encourage team members to report safety catches; reward team members for bringing safety issues to light.
Vineyard Management
- Oversee work assignments and ensure punctual and accurate timecard records.
- Oversee mechanical operations, provide direction and recommendations for addressing potential problems.
- Drive innovation and efficiencies in our mechanical vineyard operation.
- Oversee implementation of block plan for all blocks to ensure SKU demands are met and block budget is achieved.
- Manage harvest scheduling, shift timing, contract company support and harvest reporting.
- Ensures quality control on work performed.
Budget
- Maintain block histories on canopy management performed.
- Assist in budget development for crops in progress, vineyard development and capitol planning/purchasing.
- Focus on Total Cost Productivity and highlight team wins
- Actively capture cost of poor quality and continuous improvement initiatives; report our regularly to increase awareness for budget implications
- Drive cost saving measures while improving wine grape quality and vine health/longevity.
Team Development
- Empower and motivate employees to embrace ownership within their boundaries
- Provide direction, prioritization, and project assignments when necessary
- Drive ideal behaviors through lean principles and training
- Create annual goals that are measurable and aligned with key business initiatives; build ownership and investment in those goals with team members.
- Hold regular one on one meetings to provide feedback, check in on goals and provide coaching support.
- Develop rising leaders through winegrowing initiatives, Career planning and mentorship opportunities.
- Assists in the recruiting, training, and onboarding of new employees.
Education or experience necessary
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college in agricultural field or equivalent experience.
- Minimum 4- 5 years supervisory or managerial experience in a vineyard.
- Excellent knowledge of viticulture and a general knowledge of winemaking practices and cycles.
- Thorough knowledge of viticulture practices and experience in vineyard planning and development.
- Experience managing and motivating employees to meet quality, production and safety standards established by the company.
Physical Demands/Qualifications
- Must be able to hike uneven terrain in vineyards.
- Must be prepared work in all weather conditions year-round.
- Must be able to stand, bend and twist frequently and lift and carry up to 50 lbs
- Committed to work long hours and many weekends during harvest and other times of heavy workloads.
Non-Physical Demands/Qualifications
- Bi-lingual Spanish skills may be required.
- Mechanical and Human Resources skills required.
- Computer skills required: Outlook, SharePoint, Word, Excel, and Accounting software etc.
- *Environmental Conditions
Will be required to go out-of-doors and into various parts of the winery and vineyard subjecting the incumbent to variations in temperature and humidity. Summer season will subject incumbent to high heat exposure.
