The Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) is seeking to fill a Weigh Station Technician at our Middletown Scales Motor Carrier Service Center. The Weight Station Technician will ensure the safety of motorists and the protection of Virginia’s highways by monitoring overweight and oversized trucks. This position interacts with State Police, local law enforcement personnel, and officials to ensure safety and weighing policies and procedures regarding Virginia’s size and weight laws are enforced safely and professionally.
Duties include:
  • Weigh and inspect commercial vehicles for safety infractions such as malfunctioning brakes and overweight and oversized conditions
  • Inspect motor carrier documents such as IFTA, IRP, and operating authority;
  • Identify and report vehicle and traffic problems;
  • Record safety violation information concerning local routing and state truck laws;
  • Collect and analyze data such as size and weight to facilitate law enforcement activities including liquidated damages.
  • Operate a push and riding lawn mower to maintain the grounds
  • Clean the interior of the facility


Training will be provided. The starting salary for this position is $38,894.

This position will work the Midnight Shift (midnight to 8 a.m.). A shift differential of three percent will be added to the base salary.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Experience with collecting, editing, and manipulating data using computers.
  • Some knowledge of truck configuration and equipment; and state and federal requirements on overweight and oversize configurations.
  • Considerable multitasking skills with strong eye/hand coordination to track trucks on a computer screen while observing truck and highway traffic movement.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in confined quarters for long periods and remain focused on monitoring trucks for safety issues;
  • Troubleshoot truck equipment problems by analyzing and verifying potential problems;
  • Perform mathematical calculations, including percentages; analyze data and make recommendations on traffic control measures at facilities or sites;
  • Communicate tactfully with customers and staff;
  • Effectively work a rotating or permanent schedule as assigned;
  • Work outdoors in all weather conditions; lift, position, transport, and operate mobile scales as needed;
  • Operate a push and riding lawnmower to maintain grounds;
  • Clean the interior of the facility, and lift 50 pounds. Valid driver’s license and driver record demonstrating respect for the laws administered by DMV.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with truck configuration and equipment.
  • Knowledge of truck weighing procedures and policies, related Virginia and federal laws, and the Motor Vehicle Code of Virginia.
  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Prior Experience weighing Trucks.
