Grant Funded Position – continued employment contingent on funding.

This is a professional position responsible for radio tracking alligator snapping turtles. Conducts radio telemetry surveys and collects habitat data. Works under general supervision, with limited latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment. Reports to the principal investigator (PI).
Essential Job Functions
  • Conducts post-release monitoring of repatriated turtles using radio telemetry.
  • Provides data to PI every month, including hard copies and electronic copies.
Non-Essential Job Functions
Performs other related duties as assigned.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
The individual must possess the following knowledge, skills and abilities or be able to explain and demonstrate that the individual can perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Knowledge of, or the ability to learn, university policies and procedures.
  • Skill in radio telemetry.
  • Skill in using computer applications including spreadsheet, database, and word processing software.
  • Skill in completing assignments accurately with attention to detail.
  • Ability to conduct turtle surveys.
  • Ability to problem solve a variety of situations.
  • Ability to work successfully as a member of a team and independently with general supervision.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written form.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a valid Texas driver’s license and obtain university driving permit.
  • Ability to work evenings, nights, and weekends as necessary.
  • Physical condition adequate to permit full performance of duties.
Physical Demands
Physical ability to perform the duties of the position, including ability to stand and sit for more than one hour at a time; lift more than 50 pounds; use hands to finger/handle/feel; reach with hands and arms; stoop, kneel, crouch, bend, crawl, climb or balance; speak and hear regularly, as well as close vision. Must be able to drive university vehicles, travel out of town and overnight (camping), and perform aquatic habitat fieldwork exposed to environmental conditions for periods up to five consecutive days at a time.
Required Education
Bachelor’s degree in biology, ecology, forestry, wildlife, and fisheries sciences or a related field is required.
Required Experience and Training
No direct employment experience is required. Experience in conducting turtle surveys and using radio telemetry is required. Ability to obtain and maintain a valid Texas driver’s license is required.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience in towing small vessels up to 25 feet is preferred.

Min Pay Rate Mid Pay Rate Salary Information Hiring Salary - $2500/month Specific Job Requirements/Duties for this Posting
Must be able to travel out of town and overnight (camping) throughout East Texas. Fieldwork will likely consist of four to five days in the field at a time.

This position is eligible for participation in the Optional Retirement Program (ORP), subject to the position being full-time and at least 4 ½ months in length, or the Teacher Retirement System of Texas retirement plan, subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.
