Who We Are:

J&R Day Camp is located in Monroeville, PA. Owned and operated by the Jewish Community Center of Greater Pittsburgh, J&R is a co-ed day camp with an emphasis on teambuilding, developing positive values, independence and premiere programming and activities. Our child-centered environment focuses on creating community and enriching the lives of our campers, families and staff. We serve children ages 5-14 through meaningful experiences that focus on building connections, teaching values, fostering individual growth and having fun. Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience and/or qualification in instructing woodshop activities for elementary and middle school-aged children
  • Ability to complete Woodworking training and certification
  • Desire and willingness to work with children
  • Ability and willingness to accept supervision and guidance
  • Good character, integrity, and adaptability

General Responsibility:

To teach campers the skills and techniques to safely produce wood projects, empowering them with the ability to create something

Specific Responsibilities:

  • Be available for 6 hours of remote pre-camp planning in May and June
  • Participate in Staff Week June 19-23, 2023 (pre-camp)
  • Attend Camp Open House
  • Demonstrate crafting skill level and ability to use hand tools safely and efficiently
  • Help campers plan and design projects and oversee and guide them during cutting, sanding, assembly, painting and finishing of projects
  • Prepare for and actively participate in staff trainings and meetings
  • Assist in conducting initial and end-of-season inventory
  • Set up woodworking tent prior to camp during pre-camp
  • Implement weekly lesson plans by unit and age group for Woodworking
  • Responsible for daily organization and storage of woodworking equipment and materials
  • Prepare for and lead week-long chugim (club) for 3rd-5th grade campers throughout the summer
  • Assist in packing all materials and supplies at end of season
  • Be a positive, contributing member of the specialist team
  • Attend specialist and leadership team meetings at least 3 times per week

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Set a good example for campers including cleanliness, punctuality, sharing cleanup and chores, and sportsmanship.
  • Follow camp rules and regulations
  • Encourage respect for personal property, camp equipment and facilities.
  • Manage personal time off in accordance with camp policy. • Additional responsibilities as assigned

Compensation:

  • $1,200 age 15
  • $2,100-$3,600 age 16+ depending on experience
  • $350 bonus if you miss 10% of days or less of contracted time to work, age 15-17
  • $700 bonus if you miss 10% of days or less of contracted time to work, age 18+
  • $250 if you work for all 9 weeks of camp (includes staff orientation) and miss 10% of days or less, regardless of age
  • Bonuses will be awarded in final paycheck

Physical Qualifications:

While performing duties of this job the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl and talk to hear. The employee is frequently required to stand, walk and sit. The employee is frequently required to lift up to 25 pounds and occasionally required to lift up to 50 pounds.

Must be able to obtain ACT 33/34 and FBI clearances, NSOR Certificate and mandated reporter training.
