Position Information

Arlington County's Public Library is seeking a customer service oriented, enthusiastic, and creative Youth Services Librarian. This position will be responsible for planning programs for children from birth to high school age and their families and/or caregivers; performing Librarian in Charge duties as needed in the absence of management; overseeing the youth collection of the location; and fostering partnerships and programs with local community groups, schools, and child-care facilities.

Specific duties include:


  • Serving as a children's specialist to coordinate and develop all youth programs for the branch to include story times, book talks, special events, and book discussion groups;
  • Promoting library outreach services and presenting programs to child-care facilities, preschools, schools, and groups promoting services to youth; may include driving a county vehicle or bookmobile to outreach events;
  • Providing reference and reader's advisory service to children and adults of diverse backgrounds, some of them with limited English skills;
  • Serving as back-up during supervisor's absence from the branch and assisting with administrative activities and reports, and helping oversee staffing and security needs;
  • Coordinating teen and youth service volunteers to include recruiting, hiring, and allocating work assignments; and
  • Participating in the system-wide Youth Services Team and other teams as assigned.

The successful candidates must be experienced in creating new services and programs for youth, and provide evidence of proven success in community outreach, and have strong familiarity with youth and teen literature.

Selection Criteria

Minimum:


  • Master's Degree in Library Science or Information Science from an ALA accredited college or university; and
  • One (1) year of experience serving in a Youth Services Librarian role.
Desirable: Preference may be given to applicants with one or more of the following:
  • Experience working with children and youth in a Library setting;
  • Providing customer service to the public;
  • Planning, managing, and scheduling the work of others;
  • Strong knowledge in early literacy foundations and child development; and/or
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish).

Special Requirements


The applicant must possess, or obtain by the time of appointment, a valid motor vehicle operator's licenses from the applicant's place of residence or the applicant must have the ability and willingness to use alternative methods of transportation to perform assigned duties and responsibilities at locations other than the primary worksite. If the applicant possesses or acquires a license, the applicant must authorize Arlington County to obtain, or the applicant must provide copy of the applicant's official state/district driving record. Any offer of employment is contingent upon a favorable review of the applicant's driving record.

Additional Information


Work Hours and location: Full-time, 40 hours per week. Schedule includes some evening and weekend work. Assignment location may change over time. Current vacancy is at the Courthouse Library.

Must be able to push heavy book carts, lift 25 lbs., and stand for extended periods of time.

This position is a part of an alternative pay program that includes career path and pay-for-performance elements and an extended salary ceiling. Entry level within the band is based on a review of qualifications and experience. Pay potential will be based on performance and employee development.
