RANGE SUPPORT CRAFT – ASSISTANT ENGINEER


VETS is a leading provider of enduring support for the essential missions of the U.S. government, its allied partners, and international organizations. We are actively seeking an RSC Assistant Engineer to support the Navy Integrated Training Environment (NITE) contract in San Diego, CA.

Essential Responsibilities (not limited to):

  • Performs daily routine scheduled maintenance
  • Operates machinery and equipment
  • Stands a 12-hour watch while underway, inspecting equipment and recording temperatures, pressures, and verifying proper operation.
  • Maintains daily logs
  • Assists Deck Department operations as required.
  • Maintains potable water level, monitors holding tanks
  • Keeps an inventory of tools and spares
  • Ensures engineering spaces are clean and orderly at all times
  • Participates in drills, safety meetings, and training
  • Other tasks as determined by Chief Engineer
  • Must be available when boat is in port as directed by captain or chief engineer to support maintenance and operational readiness.
  • Maintain inventory as directed by Chief Engineer to ensure critical repair materials are kept aboard.


Minimum Requirements:

  • High School diploma or GED
  • Previous shipboard mechanical experience
  • Oiler/QMED Rating Merchant Mariner Credential
  • Able to perform basic mathematical calculations
  • Basic working knowledge of marine equipment and systems
  • Knowledge of safe working practices and procedures
  • Ability to read and comprehend Operations & Maintenance Manuals, and Technical drawings
  • MMD with STCW-95
  • Must have the ability to obtain an Interim Security Clearance (or transfer) in a timely manner, and maintain a US Government (DoD) Secret Clearance for this position on the NITE Contract.
  • Proficient and comfortable with computers including network and Microsoft Office products
  • Excellent verbal and written English skills
  • Must be able to lift 50lbs, climb ladders and stairs
  • Must be able to swim
  • Must be available when boat is in port as directed by captain or chief engineer to support maintenance and operational readiness.
  • Applicant must follow Company policies, and all local, state and federal regulations.

Sea Service Requirements:

  • 180 days of service in a rating at least equal to that of a wiper or coal passer.
    • Electrician/Refrigerating Engineer
    • Oiler
    • Fireman/Watertender
    • Junior Engineer
    • Pumpman/Machinist
    • QMED – Any Rating (must hold all 5 ratings to be endorsed)


Approved training programs, other than those classified as a school ship, may substitute for up to one-half of the required service. OR

  • A graduate of a school ship may qualify for a rating endorsement as QMED, without further service, upon satisfactory completion of the program of instruction. For this purpose, school ship is interpreted to mean an institution that offers a complete approved program of instruction, including a period of at-sea training, in the skills appropriate to the rating of QMED.
  • Training programs, other than those classified as a school ship, may be substituted for up to one-half of the required service. The service/training ratio for each program is determined by the Coast Guard.


NOTES:

  • Original single ratings of Pumpman, Machinist, Electrician or Refrigerating Engineer will no longer be issued. Mariner can only be issued combined ratings of Pumpman/Machinist and/or Electrician/Refrigerating Engineer.
  • Mariners holding a single rating that is now combined and request the combined rating will need to pass the appropriate exam.
  • Original endorsements of Deck Engineer, Deck Engine Mechanic or Engineman will no longer be issued.
  • Mariners may renew any previous endorsement as is.
  • If QMED Deck Engineer, Deck Engine Mechanic, or Engineman were held, renew as is for those three endorsements, even if the mariner has all other QMEDs and is also issued QMED – Any Rating. See Drafting Manual

Exams:

  • Course completion certificate in lieu of Coast Guard examination
  • Applicant is testing for:
    • Fireman/Watertender
    • Oiler
    • Junior Engineer
    • Electrician/Refrigerating Engineer
    • Pumpman/Machinist

NOTES:

  • Engineer Officers will be endorsed for all entry level ratings and any other QMED ratings for which they qualify by completing the appropriate QMED examination(s). See CG-MMC Policy Letter 04-18.
  • After March 24, 2014, we are no longer using “Any Unlicensed Rating in the Engine Department” for mariners who previously held this it will be replaced with QMED-Any Rating.
  • All others must pass the individual QMED examinations to receive the corresponding individual QMED rating endorsements. (12.201).
  • If all QMED exams passed, will receive QMED – Any Rating
