DEPARTMENT DESCRIPTION

The Marketing and Communications team is part of the EM Vice Provost’s Office. The Communications Director reports directly to the Vice Provost. The unit supports marketing, social media, web content, print, photo, video and digital communications, and works with the Office of Strategic Communications on any news and media outreach, per UC Davis policy. The unit serves the EM and UE leadership teams through the planning and implementation of a comprehensive strategic communications program to support understanding and awareness of critical information for prospective and current students and their families, campus partners, and external publics.

JOB SUMMARY

The Director of Marketing and Communications provides communications and marketing leadership for Enrollment Management (EM) and Undergraduate Education (UE). Oversees the development and implementation of a comprehensive, multi-channel (digital, print, and social media) communications program that supports the needs and priorities of both the EM and UE organizations. Offers executive leadership teams guidance on reputational management and public relations issues in consultation with the Office of Chancellor and Provost’s (OCP) Strategic Communications office. Leads a team of communications professionals to deliver a full range of marketing and communications services.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Sit for extended periods of time working at a computer.
  • Discern color in order to prepare and review various publications, both print and electronic.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • At times work beyond the standard work schedule to attend meetings and events, may include evenings and weekends.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Additional Minimum License/Certification:

Minimum Education/Experience:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in communications or related discipline; or the equivalent combination of education, training and experience from which comparable skills can be acquired.
  • Strong experience with increasing responsibility with a minimum of 7 years in the communications field (journalism, graphic design, marketing, development communications and/or public relations).
  • Experience using e-communication and social media platforms to enhance communication and deliver messages to target audiences.
  • Experience delegating work to internal and/or free-lance creative staff.

Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA) :

  • Demonstrated writing skills, including skills to use written language accurately, concisely and creatively; command of correct grammar, spelling, and punctuation; and skills in editing and proofing copy.
  • Knowledge of publishing techniques, including the editorial, graphic design, style, and production aspects of publishing.
  • Skills to recognize and assess situations and events with news value and to propose and implement the best strategies for publicity.
  • Solid management skills to select, train, evaluate, lead, direct, guide and motivate subordinate staff to produce high quality work; skill to take corrective action as required.
  • Organizational skills to handle multiple tasks and meet numerous deadlines.
  • Skills to use computers for document creation, multimedia presentations, research and analysis, and communications.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Preferred Education/Experience:

  • Experience managing financial resources and planning and adhering to budgets. Strong knowledge of financial and personnel management, including understanding of management techniques, guiding principles, relevant laws, policies and best practices.
  • Experience with Mac OS.

  • Solid skills to create, develop and implement comprehensive long and short-term strategic communication plans.
  • Interpersonal skills to establish and maintain excellent working relationships with faculty, staff, outside vendors, alumni, students and donors.
  • Skills generating innovative approaches, originating action without instruction, and establishing goals and priorities in the development of programs and special events.
  • Understanding of higher education issues and practices.
  • Knowledge of market research practices, including data collection, analysis and interpretation, and reporting of results, and skills to supervise and guide vendors of market research services.
