Job Summary: The Controller is a key leader of the Finance team who reports to the CFO and is visible throughout the agency’s management team. The Controller manages the accounting and General Ledger of Sheltering Arms, including preparing financial statements and tax reporting and managing internal and external audits. The Controller administers the financial policies of Sheltering Arms in compliance with funder requirements and has the ability to successfully manage multiple priorities with competing timelines.
Essential Functions
- Manage the general ledger, oversee all activities in the accounting application
- Develop and implement appropriate control and risk management procedures
- Identify opportunities to streamline and upgrade accounting application and lead implementation of new processes and technologies
- Oversee the preparation, control, and review of the payroll
- Oversee daily and monthly banking activities including managing daily cash reporting and analysis
- Prepare monthly and annual financial reports
- Manage the year-end audit with the outside auditors and manage program audits
- Manage relationships with auditors, government agencies, and consultants
- Financial liaison with City, State, and Federal agencies
- Prepare CFR and SSOP reports for submission, with consultants
- Participate in budget process led by the Budget Director
- Manage, coach, and develop Finance team members
- Engage in special projects and other duties as assigned
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting or related field.
- CPA/other applicable certification a plus
- Knowledge of nonprofit GAAP accounting
- At least ten years of progressive responsibility in accounting for complex government-funded programs including Medicaid, rate-based, and cost-based programs
- Excellent judgement and the interpersonal skills
- Excellent management skills including the ability to lead, motivate, and develop a team
- Previous experience in a large Human Services Agency desirable
- Previous experience with Medicaid funding and reporting required
- Prior knowledge of NYC cost-based funding desirable
- Strong communications skills
- Excellence administering accounting applications including the ability to trouble-shoot reports (currently using Financial Edge NXT)
- Love of new technology and the ability to work with internal/external teams to implement new applications
- Team player
- Excellent Excel skills including VLookup and Pivot Tables.
- Ability to set priorities and thrive in a fast-paced environment.
Salary: $145K-165K
