Position Summary: Under the direction of the Senior Aquatics Director, the Aquatic Director will develop and implement aquatic risk management strategies relevant to the YMCA of Greater Brandywine’s aquatic lifeguards. Abiding by the ELLIS Aquatic guidelines this position will directly supervise the lifeguards at West Chester Area YMCA, ensuring all lifeguards are licensed, trained, scheduled and audited. This position will be responsible for the budget and operations of all lifeguards, their trainings and the programs they support while ensuring safety in various risk categories, including but not limited to pandemic planning and protocols, aquatic safety, child abuse prevention, emergency response training, and participant safety at aquatic operational sites. This position will be directly involved in, and will be accountable for, aquatic safety and aquatic safety management impacting the organization.
Responsibilities:
- Implement the ELLIS program throughout the Aquatic departments.
- Ensure all lifeguards are ELLIS Licensed and perform Vigilant Awareness Trainings (VATs) frequently to confirm skills are maintained and safety is paramount.
- Ensure proper staffing levels of lifeguards in each branch.
- Direct and supervise the branch lifeguard associates.
- Hire, train and schedule all lifeguards.
- Develop, monitor and administer annual budget (income and expense) for the Aquatics Department within the parameters set by the Association. Ensure that the Aquatic lifeguarding financials are in a positive fiscal position in relation to budget.
- Review revenue generation by providing community lifeguard trainings & certifications
- Develop, implement, manage, and use data to evaluate operating safety plans to promote programs and/or membership growth for the YMCA in the Aquatic Department. Develop and support safety strategies to ensure that members and/or program participants connect with one another and connect with the YMCA.
- Implement and meet/exceed the ELLIS audit scores in each branch
- Address and resolve all aquatic incidents in a timely manner, communicating with Association senior leadership team and relevant stakeholders to investigate and report on incidents and injuries; perform post incident reviews, and design remediation and prevention plans as needed.
- Ensure all external reporting requirements are met on a timely basis.
- In coordination with key operations and HR staff, provide content for annual trainings for Aquatics as needed.
- Perform regular and ad-hoc program safety audits for aquatic areas and pools to ensure compliance with safety and risk management protocol and safety compliance (i.e. OSHA, NFPA)
- Perform annual audits on required safety related trainings for lifeguards, including child abuse prevention, slip/trip/fall prevention, safe lifting chemical safety, emergency response planning, CPR/AED/O2, and First Aid.
- Bachelor’s degree preferred
- One -Three years of Aquatic Safety and Risk Management experience, in the area specific to aquatic settings
- YMCA experience preferred
- ELLIS licensed and ELLIS instructor licensed (Training can be provided)
- Obtain instructor/trainer license within 6 months of employment
- Ability to maintain and establish favorable relationships with staff, vendors, insurers, and all other stakeholders

- Obtain and maintain all new hire certifications and trainings within 90 days of hire
