Summary
The Barry Advertising Company will provide an opportunity for students to use classroom theories and concepts and apply them in real-world business situations through their unique perspective and creativity. Students will become advertising and marketing professionals for the University and external clients under the close guidance of this position, their faculty course instructors, Barry marketing staff, and designated mentors.
The Director of the Barry Advertising Company (BAC,) the Student-Powered Advertising Agency will be responsible for all agency operations including general administration, recruitment/staffing/ personnel management, overall business functions and planning, strategic outreach to internal and external clients, among others.
The Director will collaborate across divisions to promote the agency’s opportunities and services and will document and report on milestones and accomplishments.
In addition, the Director will meet regularly with BarryU Faculty and Staff, the Agency’s Advisory Council, will source internal and external mentors, and will serve as liaison with the BarryU Marketing and Brand Department in order to design student-enriching work experiences.

Essential Functions
Leadership:
  • Lead, manage and provide strategic and business direction for all agency operations. Monitor the initiative’s effectiveness, adjust as needed, and report progress to stakeholders. Articulate an ongoing vision and development plan for the agency business as well as student engagement, persistence, and progress.
Personnel/ Staffing Management:
  • The Director will play in an integral role in creating a student-staffing pipeline from all sources at BarryU. The Director will manage, mentor, assign roles, and evaluate staff with a mindset towards creating real-world business experiences for student employees. The Director will manage internships, practicums, work-study, volunteers, and other sources of student employees and document as necessary. The Director will also source advisors, mentors from Barry faculty and staff, alumni and advertising and marketing professionals.
Business Results and Funding:
  • The Director will create ongoing strategic and business plans to ensure the sustainability of agency business and the student engagement model. The Director will work to earn new business from internal and external clients, manage the workflow and assignments within the agency and keep students interested and involved with Agency business. The Director will actively work to source Pro-Bono work from organizations in the local community to enhance student experiences. The Director will also collaborate with IA to secure continuous donor funding for this student engagement/retention model.
Creation of Career Pathways and Opportunities:
  • Ideate and collaborate with Human Resources, Career Services, BAC Advisory Council, Faculty, and Staff to create career pathways for students interested in pursuing advertising and marketing industry jobs.
Agency Self-Promotion:
  • Promote the student-powered Agency on Social Media and Advertising and Marketing Industry Events. Create partnerships/ co-promotions/ opportunities with local and national advertising organizations: Advertising Federation of Greater Miami, American Advertising Federation, American Marketing Association, the American Association of Advertising Agencies, Association of National Advertisers, the Miami Ad School, among others.
  • Will co-create the Advertising and Self-Promotion plan for the agency – including website, agency credentials, social media presence + printed and e-collateral for potential clients, sponsors and/or donors.
  • Will contact and evangelize the student-powered agency among established ad agencies in order to create collaborative opportunities for business, or student experience/ employment.
  • Serve as a senior member of the Marketing team– contributing ideas and strategies to enhance Barry’s marketing profile, advertising work and brand image. Collaborate on major marketing initiatives —individually or with the BAC.
Qualifications/Requirements
  • A Bachelor’s degree in Marketing, Advertising, Communications or related field is required
  • A Master's degree in Marketing, Advertising, Communications or related field is preferred
  • Experience in Advertising, Marketing or Communications fields may substitute for some of the education above.
  • 5-8 years of work-related experience is required

  • Must be willing to work a flexible schedule, including some evenings and weekends as needed for industry events
  • Must be aware and plugged into advertising, marketing, social media, pop culture, generational and design trends among others and must confidently speak to students about it.
