Position Summary:
The Education Coordinator is responsible for the monitoring of key Head Start Performance Standards requirements. Under the general supervision of the Tribal Child Development Director, and in coordination with the Site Supervisors and Site Coordinator, the Education Coordinator will provide training and technical assistance to all teaching personnel, develop curricula and provide educational resources for staff and parents. The Education Coordinator will serve as a mentor and coach for teaching staff in order to help staff meet the Head Start Act requirement of having BAs in Early Education. The Education Coordinator is responsible for all aspects of classroom and education program requirements for all Head Start facilities existing through the California Rural Indian Health Board, Inc. The incumbent is responsible for overseeing the Enrollment, Recruitment, Selection, Eligibility, and Attendance (ERSEA) of the program, along with preparing the School Readiness goals, workgroup, and implementation, and developing the Training and Technical Assistant work plan yearly. Along with duties as assigned or delegated to this position.
Essential Functions:
- Monitoring of applicable Head Start Performance Standards content area by the use of software, communication with staff, review of data, site visits, and review of reports.
- Will provide the director with monthly reports on the following topics: enrollment, recruitment, school readiness, child assessments, teaching staff meetings, trainings provided, lesson planning, coaching and professional development work plans, and key monitoring components.
- Performs all duties aligned with ERSEA, inclusive of making enrollment selections and uploading all children’s files onto the appropriate software.
- Provides mentoring and coaching to teaching staff that includes monthly meetings with staff on this topic.
- Will perform teacher observational assessments at minimum, two times a year and provide coaching to staff on this topic that will tie in with professional development and educational goals for teaching staff.
- Identifies evidence-based curriculum and software to be implemented at the Head Start centers and becomes the lead expert on this topic providing support to teaching staff.
- Trains teaching staff how to develop and implement lesson plans that are age appropriate, while providing routine review and training on this topic.
- Will design training schedules for teaching staff to build upon Head Start Performance Standards.
- At minimum will train staff yearly on ERSEA, class management, child assessment tools, teacher assessment tools and related software.
- Travels to each site regularly to monitors and evaluate teachers and aides to ensure that component goals and objectives are on schedule and achieved.
- Will carry out licensing requirements at designated site(s).
- Will conduct Teaching Staff evaluations yearly as assigned.
- Will participate in networking with other Head Start programs and other aspects of Early Childhood Education and Child Development.
14. Carries out goals, policies and activities designed to implement educational objectives and performance standards.
- Updates the service work plans in conjunction with the policy council, parents and other center staff.
- Prepares annual assessment of classroom equipment and material needs. Will review center needs for educational materials in conjunction with teachers and provide recommendations to the department director.
- Plans the educational program with an interdisciplinary team of staff, parents and outside program specialist.
- Will work actively and track teaching staff’s progress towards achieving an AA degree in early education and then BA degrees.
- Assists in the design, development and delivery of in-service training and orientation for teaching staff.
- Works with teaching team to assist in developing approaches or work plans to address children’s behavioral issues; identify learning disabilities to make recommendations on updating lesson plans to individualize and ensuring that the 45 day cut offs are not missed.
- Will routinely inspect center facilities for health, safety, fire, and occupancy violations and ensure that required facility plans are in place.
- Complete cycle on-site monitoring visits calendar and provide calendar to Director. Schedule to include unannounced site visits. The visits will include review of children’s files.
- In emergency Education Coordinator may be requested to take over classroom responsibilities.
- Will assist in gathering data for the Annual Public Report, the Program Information Report, the Self-Assessment Report, and the Community Assessment Report.
- Will assist the Tribal Child Development Director as assigned.
Additional Responsibilities:
- Maintain a valid, unrestricted California Driver’s license and ability to be insurable under CRIHB’s automobile insurance. If employee has a valid license from another state, he/she must obtain a CA license within 2 months of hiring date.
- Position requires occasional over night travel within CRIHB’s service area.
- Requires ability to drive up to 7 hours a day.
- Knowledge of computer systems for tracking Head Start participants.
- Ability to coordinate and facilitate group meetings.
- Capable of understanding and writing policies for Head Start centers.
Qualifications:
1. (a) Possess a B.A. degree in Child Development/Early Childhood Education; (b) Possess a B.A. degree or Advanced Degree in related field equivalent to a child development education and holds a current Child Development Associates (CDA) Site Supervisor certificate.
2. Must have a minimum of three (3) years of experience in a management position.
3. Two (2) years of experience teaching Head Start/Preschool preferred.
3. Ability to demonstrate sound and mature judgment.
4. Knowledge and skills in working with Head Start Programs.
5. Ability to understand the difference and diversity of different cultural groups.
6. Ability and knowledge to work with 3-5-year-old children and meet Head Start Standards of Conduct and Confidentiality.
7. Write logically, clearly, concisely and effectively with good grammar.
8. Ability to coordinate a variety of activities related to instruction and be able to effectively and efficiently evaluate Curriculum used in the classroom.
This position requires an awareness and keen appreciation of American Indian traditions, customs and socioeconomic needs and the ability at all times to meet and deal effectively in contacts with Indian organizations which requires tact, courtesy, discretion, resourcefulness, and good judgment in handling functions of a sensitive nature.
