The Town of Granite Falls is seeking a service-oriented professional that is passionate about supporting the mission to protect the life and property of the citizens and visitors of Granite Falls through prevention, education, and mitigation services delivered with pride and integrity to fille the position of Fire Engineer. Granite Falls, (approximate population 5,000) is located in the western piedmont area of Western North Carolina and is part of the Hickory Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA), the sixth largest MSA in the state. Granite Falls is located approximately 40 miles southeast of Boone, 65 miles northwest of Charlotte, and 70 miles east of Asheville, and is the southernmost municipality in Caldwell County, bordering Lake Hickory and Lake Rhodhiss on the southern and western sides of town, respectively. Major transportation routes serving the Town include US 321 and US 321A, which run north and south through the Town and Interstate 40 located approximately 5 miles south in the City of Hickory. The Town has a council-manager form of government, consisting of a mayor and six councilmembers, each elected on a non-partisan basis to serve staggered four-year-terms. The Town provides a full range of municipal services with a current budget of $16.6 million. The Fiscal Year 2022-2023 budget includes a total General Fund budget of $6.7 million, Water/Sewer Fund Budget of $2.7 million, and Electric Fund budget of $7.2 million.
The Fire Engineer participates in the operations of fire suppression and incident response personnel and operations at the fire station. Incident response includes emergency medical service, operation of fire apparatus, firefighting, technical rescue, hazardous materials response/mitigation, and equipment and facilities maintenance. The employee also participates in incidence response and fire suppression training. Work requires that the employee stay abreast of state-of-the-art fire suppression and rescue procedures, techniques, and equipment and requires the employee to incorporate the necessary changes into in-service training. Ability to make effective decisions under pressure is required in all aspects of work. Work is performed in potentially dangerous situations and is performed in inside and outside environments, in extreme hot and cold temperatures, loud noise, vibration, moving parts, high heat, chemical, fumes, odors, dusts, gases, poor ventilation, oils, wearing respirators, and working in close quarters. The employee is also subject to the final OSHA standards on blood borne pathogens. Work is performed under regular supervision and is evaluated through observation, conferences, and written reports concerning the quality and effectiveness of work completed.
The Fire Engineer’s shift schedule is 24/72.
Education and Experience Requirements:
Graduation from high school, or possession of General Education Diploma, supplemented by courses and seminars in fire service and considerable experience in fire service; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Possession of North Carolina State Firefighter Certification, NCAREMS Rescue Certification, North Carolina State Certified EMT, and a valid North Carolina Class B Driver’s License is required.
Compensation and Benefits:
The Town of Granite Falls offers a competitive salary commensurate with experience and qualifications. The starting pay for this position is $41,017.60, which includes a base salary of $39,208 and holiday pay totaling $1,809.60. The Town provides a comprehensive benefits package including health, dental, vision, and life insurance; Local Government Employees Retirement System (LGERS) contribution; annual vacation, sick leave, and paid holidays. Additional benefits include bereavement and parental leave, education reimbursement, and longevity pay.
